Soap Makers Help!

The iced tea bar sounds very nice Are you using real tea?...I made a green tea pear once...the pear did not hold up well in the gel. It traced very quickly though....

I made a GUINESS shampoo bar...it turned out so cool looking...I had to flatten the beer first...it is a dark dark brown. I should post photos soon...

I'm making a Bermuda Sands and Salt bar with pumice and salt right now...the fragrance is very strong....clean smelling....I'm going to let this one GEL. I've got to cut in a few hours and I'm nervous!

Share that shampoo bar recipe please. It sounds lovely.

I am using black tea, with the leaves, a very mild sugary lemon fragrance - it really is a great scent like drinking a tall glass of iced tea on a warm summer day.

I sent my soaps in the muslin bags. They are the 3x5 size bags from the site Cheeptrick posted. But they are only 1/2 sized bars. My regular bars fit perfect in the 4x6 size, and I can fit 2 bars and a sponge in the 5x7 ones.

MP, those sound great and very unique.

chiknwhisperer Congrats on the looky loos! I hope they buy them. I think I'd be like you and checking up on them all the time!

Backyard Buddies Plumeria sound so pretty! how was it to soap with? I've heard that some Floral fragrances are hard to work with because they can seize. I've been keeping a log of all the fragrances I've been using andhow they acted.

Cheeptrick, I second MP, I would love to hear about your shampoo bar. I've been trying to come up with a recipe for one and use flat beer for the liquid too.

I sold a $100.00 worth of soap today to another one of Chris' teachers.

That will at least cover my last order of oils!

Wow! Nice sale!

The Plumeria was fine to work with and didn't seize at all. My original idea with the plumeria was to make a Hawaiian bar - using some Hawaiian nut oils, coconut milk for the liquid, etc, then coloring it pink and yellow and white. However, I never got around to ordering the oils so I just did it with a standard recipe. Perhaps I'll do it in another batch as I'm starting to run low on Castor so it's about time to place another order with Columbus Foods.

Plumeria isn't my favorite scent. It's not that I don't like it or that I'm allergic to it, but every time I use a plumeria scent I get a bit on the dizzy/woozy side. It's an odd thing - like foggy brain syndrome. But, I was making this at the request of someone else, so I'm suffering through it.

Gardenia does the same thing to me.

I wanna know about the shampoo bar, too. Beer is a great idea for a shampoo bar recipe!

I look forward to seeing the Muslin bags!

Morgaine I took those pictures the way you said to and they turned out great! I'll be taking my pics like that from now on.
Everyone of you have such great ideas and advice

I was wondering what you all think of a new thread idea: soap recipes! All of the experts can post their favorite recipes and why they love them for all of us newbies!

What do you all think?

Shampoo bar is the same as regular cold process soap but with more castor and conditioning oils...
Google any shampoo bar recipe and substitue a portion of your distilled water with your flat beer.
The only difference that I see is it has a higher PH and MORE lye than cold process soap. I searched for other recipes and it was essentially the same...the recipe will not and does not run thru a calculator. That is really the only difference...I added the beer on my own whim. It lathers great...and I noticed a big difference in dandruff/itchiness...while during human test trials

(I made a one bar test recipe first before making the whole batch) I still use the commercial shampoo though and alternate between the shampoo bar and commercial shampoo...MEN love this shampoo bar...my husband was so giddy while we made it...it was hilarious to see his delight! MEN and BEER HA~~ You can add Vitamin B or E oil to it (vit B is called panthenol I think??)...gives it an extra conditioning component. I had a gift shop near the Amtrak station in VT ask me to make shampoo and conditioner...so I've been researching recipes. The shampoo bar and a tin of hair conditioner would be great for their travelers.

I'm yet to try hair conditioners...the oil phase/water phase/preservative seems a bit daunting of task. I think I can pull it off though...going to put both shampoo and hair conditioner in body butter tins. THE shampoo bar is round (and still in the PVC mold right now...I'm leaving it an extra few days before doing the PLUNGE) same diameter as the body butter tins and I'll wrap the two tins together with raffia and sticker on the tins. I think it'll be a good seller...but still lots of recipes to test. Might still go with the potassium hydroxide and make a liquid shampoo but want to see how the 'bar' does in the market first. I'll post photos when I unmold and slice...I'm afraid of the PVC mold...the plunger does well...but it takes a LOT of muscle and last time I hurt myself!!

Why is this?

I made a shampoo bar that my DH absolutely loves too. I find that I don't need conditioner when I use it. You may be able to market your bars as shampoo AND conditioner all in one bar. I bet it would sell better that way--costs less and one less think to keep track of as they travel. I have not had good success with potassium hydroxide bit maybe it was just me.

I thnk you should be targeting the 5% range for the lye. I am going to try one with castor oil and olive oil and a little coconut oil for hardening and see how it works with the dark beer.

I have been noticing that the african hair care products are heavy on shea butter and olive oil. I doubt anything more is needed for a conditioner.
