Soap Makers Help!

I just got my Scent Works order - woo hooo!

I ordered more of the Yuzu Japanese Grapefruit as well as a new one for me, Sanguigno Orange & Patchouli, which recieved good reviews on the scent review board. It's interesting. I'm not sure what Patchouli smells like on its own, but I do pick up a background note behind the orange. I understand that once it's soaped, the patchouli scent goes further into the background and lets the orange really shine. I can't wait to soap this one.

And. . . . I got four, count 'em FOUR, sniffies from SW - Vintage Original Musk, Blue Sugar, Malabar Peppercorn, and Wichita Blue Juniper. Of the four of them, I think I like the Blue Sugar the best.

I'm sorry to hear about your mouse poop soap, Morgaine. I hate when I get distracted and do something like that.

Morgaine and BirdBrain - You two ought to consider doing some bulk buys together!

I just finished soaping four batches. All four were experiments.

Orange Julius...has grated orange peel, Lemongrass FO, tea tree oil and a pureed cooked carrot for the orange color. I discounted the water and added 4 oz of whole milk at med trace. The color is holding and the citrus smell is holding nicely.

Chinese 5 spice...from the herb line at the grocery. I suffused it in warm EVOO and added it at trace. It was a warm rosey color with brown specks when I poured and imagine my

when i just peeked and it is almost Black! I added 1/2 tsp Patchouli. Smells great. The five spices are Anise, cinnamon, star anise, ginger and cloves. (bil thought I was making an apple pie)

I split a batch to make these two. This batch green tea and coconut milk added at trace:
Geranium and Sensual Sunset with no additives....creamy olive tone.
Evergreen and Forest Spirit with ground parsley for added color.

Will post pics when I unmold them.

Morgaine,
The Moose poop comment was so funny. I made some soap last year with dark chocolate and cocoa butter. After I trimmed the edges, I wadded up the curls in my hand. I looked down at them and thought (I lived in Alaska for many years) "wow, this little bit looks just like a moose pellet. " I told my DH I had just made Moose Poop Soap. He was delighted and immediately asked for a package of four to be specially wrapped as a gift for one of his more colorful coworkers. Matt loved it.

When he got a small basket of soap (really for his wife) this past Christmas, he inspected the soaps and said disappointedly, "I was hoping for some more Moose Poop.

I came across my recipe for Moose Poop the other day and had a good chuckle.

Yes, Spring is north of Houston.

BB, Morgaine and I are in totally different leagues. She is a serious soaper that is actually making money on her habit. I soap for fun and family and rarely end up selling anything. I have sold probably $120 dollars of soap period, to one of my DH's coworkers. I started soaping because my SIL is allergic to antibacterial soap. She commented to me one day that she was paying $5 dollars a bar for plain soap at the grocery store. I told her that soap couldn't be that hard to make (my grandma used to make it) and that surely we could make it cheaper than what she was spending per bar. I have also helped a neighbor perfect her recipe and she sells boat loads every weekend at the FM. I homeschool my kids and don't have time to have a business like that. I still enjoy it though.

My son came to me yesterday and asked me to make a glow in the dark soap. I have the stuff to put in to make it glow, just don't want him to use it on his face (get it in his eyes). I think it would be fun. Has anyone ever tried that? I bet you could sell bundles of it.

About fragrances, I can only do EO's and usually only lightly scent things as I tend to get migraines from strong and artificial fragrances. My neighbor gave me a bar of lavender soap a couple of months ago and I am going to have to give it away. It just about blew me over.

Remember a while back I made the double layer soap? Well I made the same kind of soap tonight but I tried something different. Instead of one color on top and another on the bottom. I made my bottom layer and swirled that one color and swirled the top with a different color. Bottom is turquoise and top is violet. Both are a light shade though, nothing real bright. I'll post pictures tomorrow after I unmold it. What do you think of the idea?
I have 14 more days before my first market

Morgaine how much money did you take with you to make change for people who needed change back?

Bird Brain....I made a glycerine melt and pour soap with these plastic glow in the dark stars embedded (u know those ones that you put on kids ceilings)...it was a HUGE hit. The soap was tinted slightly blue...my kiddos loved it and we gave some as birthday gifts. (-: It really worked too....thru the glycerine.

That sounds really pretty! I never would have thought of layering swirls like that, very creative!

I had no idea what to expect the first market so I took $100 in change, but $50 would have be enough. I just do 100 now because it is easy to balance the register. Somedays I have everyone pay with a $20 and others it has been nothing but small bills.

See, I still consider myself a hobby soaper, this whole business thing has happened so fast that I'm still in shock. I have to say that I do love doing it though.

That is a really cool idea! What kind of stuff do you have? Is it skin safe?
