Congrats chiknwhisperer, on both the soap AND THE EGGS!

I'll have to try buttermilk one of these days! Thanks for the idea. Plus, if I buy buttermilk then it'll give me an excuse to make MP's yummy pancakes again.

I told cheeptrick that I received a bunch of soaping and bath stuff off of freecycle last year. There are several bags of pepperment leaves, dry rose buds and several other thing. Can I soak these in oils to infuse them?

Thanks in advance.

jackie ~ I don't know about the oils, but I DO know that you can steep them in a few ounces of water, (just discount the 2 or 3 oz from your total liquids) & add them as a tea. You can also add them dry, but I have found that adding them dry usually means a certain amount of bleeding out as they cure ~ I like the results of steeping them & then adding the entire lot of steeped botanicals & resulting tea better. Probably just a personal choice, since I didn't notice that it made any difference in the actual quality of the soap.

I don't add any extra glycerin, as it seems my soap gels enough to make plenty of glycerin.

Show us pics!! sounds interesting!!!

Yes, the avocado oil was only done at trace - and only 3 ounces of the 120 ounces of oil. That was exactly the same that I did with the OMH batch - same recipe exactly except that OMH used all goat's milk and had the honey whereas OMA had no honey and only 1/3 milk and 2/3 water.

Both batches used FOs from Sweetcakes.
OMH used the OMH FO at 3.5 oz./120 ounces of oil.
OMA used the almond FO at 2 oz./120 ounces of oil.

Here's a picture of the Oatmeal, Milk, and Almond batch:

See anything odd about it?

So, do you regularly snack on your soaps, cheeptrick?

Shall we expect to be seeing that on your menu on the Hey Grandpa thread?

These are very pretty!!! I don't see anything odd about them at all! Are they cursed with DOS or something? If so, I can't see it ~ must be small DOS, lol.

Not to get to far off topic here but I can't halp but tell my good news. I got my first two eggs !!!!!!!!! Oh and I have 50 bars of soap curing right nowlol. One batch is buttermilk and the other was the chamomille and lemon tea. I love my chickens

Chiknwhisperer ~ WOOHOO!!! We celebrated our first eggs too! Gave the ladies extra scratch & pats on the back, lol. Also ~ sweet on the soap! Show us some pics!! I too love to see all the pics of the soaps!

Thanks! No, I don't see any DOS at all. Any specks in the soap are the oatmeal. In fact, that's what is odd about this. They don't LOOK any different. They just have excess oil to the touch. If you touch one of the soaps, you're left with a bit of oil on your fingers. Oddly enough, it's more on what was the top and bottom of the soap in the mold (the smaller edges) and not where they were cut (the larger edges). I made them a week ago.

ok ~ lol ~ 3 posts in a row ~ whew! But I wanted to show these crabbyapple bars ~ See what you ladies think ~

In the 1st pic, when I cut them, they only had a pinkish rind ~

however, in the 2nd pic, after curing another day, the entire bar turned pinkish. SO ~ unsweetened crabapple juice DOES give a slight pinkish tint, When added the way cheeptrick said, after the lye has cooled to under 90*F.

And this 3rd pic is a warning to all newcoming soapers ~ see all that soap gracing my basement pantry? It's only been ~ what? a week or two??? Folks ~ this is addictive ~ don't SAY I didn't warn you!!! ;-D

That is so cool, redhead83402! I love all the colors you've come up with. And, WOW, that is a lot of soap! I'm so jealous that you guys have these great drying racks. Mine are lining the hearth of my fireplace in the living room. I don't have anywhere else to put them unless I take them out to our RV, which I just may do tomorrow because I'd like them OUT of my living room by Thanksgiving! The wrapping crew isn't able to take them for at least another 2 weeks.

I was going to make another batch today, but didn't. Not only didn't I have enough OO (only 14.5 oz. and I've been using over 40 oz.), but I have nowhere to put them.

But, good news! At church last night, I was asked to talk about the soap to let everyone know what we're doing to raise funds for the garden. We passed around slivers of the soap so that people could see and sniff.

Afterwards, another gal came up to me and mentioned that she's done a little soaping before and would love to join me in making some more. Fun! I have another soaping buddy!

Oh, and we also recruited more garden workers as well!

I mailed off some of my chocolate soap that I had from my first batch to my best friend one state over. She emailed last night to tell me she loved it and that she gave some to her mom and she loved it to.

I need to go buy more OO today so I can get back to making soap. I'm having withdrawels!!! Its been two days and I haven't made any soap.
