Soap Makers Help!

Morgaine are you going to use an old iron pot over a fire to do the soap?? You know the kind on a tripod...

I sooo want to get one along with the old molds....

My DB ran across someone in Maryland who was getting rid of a bunch of old soap stuff but forgot that I was starting to get into it....

I went to the Shaker festival in Maryland one year and this lady had a HUGE pot over a fire making soap... I think that's when I began to long for making my own soap.... She also made her own ash to really do it the old fashioned way....

Good luck with the Faire.... You got the better deal on the corset... I paid $120 for a corset, top, skirt.... but after 10 years it still looks like new.... but sooo hot for summer wear

Yup, I going to be using a big old couldron for the demo as well as showing how to make your own lye and render the fat.

I should be able to make the skirt my self and maybe a cloak. I found shoes for $12 on line so that's not too bad. I really looking forward it!

chiknwhisperer - Your new soaps are lovely!! I need to try more swirling. My Almond Bliss was the one and only attempt I've made thus far.

I haven't soaped yet this week, but will probably do a couple of batches to get ahead of this fair. I understand that it's not a 100% that we're doing this fair yet, but I don't want to get behind in case it is approved. Then, if approved, I need to order more supplies. I've decided that I'm not going to go crazy over this. I'm going to aim to have somewhere in the range of 500 or 600+ soaps to sell at the fair and plenty of business cards if anyone wants to buy more. A couple batches a week should be fine to make that goal.

I haven't heard the final tally, but I understand that quite a bit of soap was sold at church on Sunday.

The garden is coming along nicely, with TONS of still green tomatoes on the bushes, fruit coming in, as well as peppers and eggplant. The garden recently used some of it's financial resources to donate toward a Habitat for Humanity house being built in the name of the Priest after which the garden is named.

Lots to do!

I got my order in from BB finally today. Here is what I got:
Watermelon: good, not sickening sweet like I feared. Smells like watermelon gum.
Spiced Mahogany: Oh, this is NICE! Very manly. I really like it.
Lime EO- smells just like the lime pops! Has a little earthiness to it.
Black Pepper- wasn't sure what to expect, but I like ok. I think it is one of those that really needs to be blended tobe it's best.
Free sample- Buttercream Snickerdoodle- Very very sweet and cookie like. Too much so for me personally, but I bet a lot of people would like it.
I also got some colorants for the watermelon, no all natural but eh. I got some more alkanate root powder because that stuff is awesome. Pumice for a mechanics soap, and gold mica that I want to use woth the dragon's blood scent. I also had a few little odds and ends. I got of those spouts to measure out teh fragrances from the bottle and not spill.

I'll be soaping tonight!

I didn't get huge amount since I haven't ordered these before, although that spiced mahogany might be a keeper.

Let's see, 8 oz in the spiced mahogany and watermelon
and 1 oz in the eo's. It's higher at BB than EOU, but I was already ordering from BB so I threw those in to try MLF pepper zest. Next Eo order I might get bigger sizes. I had a good weekend at the market so I will also be orderig more lye and maybe another scent works order. I have 4 pounds left of the lye. So I will order that this week.

Well, teh other soap lady wasn't there and we had a lot of return patons too. A lot of people did the 5 for $20 deal that day and I sold out of all 6 gift bags. We took in $230 that morning.
