Soap Makers Help!

I'm still here, just being quiet. I haven't soaped in over a month

I hope to soaping soon.

Morgaine -- Love the table set up.... What are the jars behind the soaps? They look like candles.... I was thinking of putting my soaps in the soap pockets as a wraper and then use the cigar band... It seems you put the "name" of the soap on your cigar band... Is that computer generated or are you that talented to write like that??

I was going to order a stamp. Put a sticker w/contents on the back to keep the cigar band together and stamp the front....

I did order boxes but they seem better suited for making up baskets or mailing....

When I first joined this thread, I did indeed read ALL of the posts... boy did that take forever....

I read through the old post frequently. I got one of my favorite recipes, so far anyway, from there a Olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil recipe. It's so smooth and very forgiving with FO. But then again I've only soaped 6 batches so far. So I'm pretty "green" at the whole thing.
My soaps aren't NEARLY as pretty as others on here, the colors blow me away!

I had the candles out because we were out til about 9:30 at night. It worked well and gave the booth a great ambiance.

As far as lables, that is one of the things that I hate doing. I hate the way mine look (when compared to other soapmakers like cheeptrick). I use Print shop. Print 5 onto a page and then use a paper cutter to cut them. But I'm thinking of getting some of these bad boys, no more cutting!

Your soap wrappers are really cute. I don't know what it costs you to make them though or how much time. Several people use shrink wrap. I glue stick the ends together. I prefer to have the names on the front so the customers or myself can tell at a glance what soap it is. And there is no way I could ever write that neatly, lol.

If you do the stamp, you could make small stickers with the name of the soaps that you put on the front.

I found the wash clothes at big lots and I think they were in a pack of 8 for $5.00 and I can get 4.5 out of one wash cloth and the cutting takes the longest to do.

Since my sewing machine is fixed I can whip those babies out in no time....

With my soaps being on the lighter side, I sell the soap w/pocket for $3.00.

DH gave me a variable wood cutter and I'm now able to get better, straighter cuts from my soaps so I might raise the price....

There's a flea market here every month at the Expo Center and I was thinking of getting in on the Christmas one and do up some baskets and samplers.... The cost of the booth is holding me back and the fact that I've only been soaping for less than a year and my soaps are no where near what others are doing... on the other hand having gone to the flea market and seen the crowds and the vendors there, there weren't any soapers and it might be a good place to start.... Folks at the local Stock Yards that have bought from me have loved the soaps so it has given me a bit of confidence to try and branch out....

Amber -- thanks for the compliment on the soap pockets.... My kids love them... They had me buy all sorts of colored wash clothes so they could have their favorite colors.... I might try to match up the colored soap pockets to the scent I think they represent... I have a great light olive green one that would be great with a balsom scent....

If I can ever get some time to get back to soaping.... I've got a ton of family orders to do for the holidays....

I am a newbie too. I have never done soap but I really want to.
ninjapoodles says that i shouldn't start with milk soap so what should I start with?
also I am kosher so i can't have anything to do with lard or pig.

Water would be best to start with. Milk can be a pain, as well as juice and purees. I would use bottled. Millersoaps.com is a great place to start. Soap Makers Companion is a good beginner book.

HA....I just changed my labels to look more like Morgaine's!! LOL I'm always changing mine...I love the boxes CW uses too. I ordered some of those and wrapped ribbons around...very pretty. I buy BULK brown craft paper in big bolts....I think I ordered 2 huge packages of them from a paper supply company in 8.5x11 and it cost me like $20 for 3000 pieces of paper. I ordered them years ago...and get 4 labels to a page...and slice on a scrapbook paper cutter. I still think it looks handmade....which is something retail stores turn their noses up at. Farmers market and craft fairs is fine...but the stores want something more professional looking. BUT professional printing costs BIG bucks...and I'm one person...one soaper....and wish I had the time to research it all.
I'm soaping tomorrow....Coconut Cream, YUZU grapefruit, and maybe CLEAN cotton...I'm all out!!
