Soap Makers Help!

I need to learn to can also. I have begged for a friend to call me when she does but nothing so far. I started reading on it & got the ball canning book. Put that book right where I would know where it is......yeah can't find it.

That depends on your recipe. The amount of lye is based on the oils used in the soap...each oil has a different saponification number because some oils are solid and some are liquid.... I have some recipes for the soaps I gave you that I will share as well as a basic soap recipe.

I was mainly trying to figure out if 1 lb of lye is enough to last a while or if its better to just grab the 2 lbs.

I have a recipe for one soap that uses 15.4 oz of lye with 115.2 oz of 6 different oils and 43.77 oz of water....makes 24 bars of soap that are 7/8 inch thick by 4 x 3. Since your batches will be smaller, a 1 pound jar will make you two batches.

Remember this is addictive and you have plenty of time to make and cure soaps for Christmas.....it's like breeds of chickens. You can't stop with only one breed/recipe.

I can help with that too. There are folks who share recipes....on BYC.

That would be wonderful!!! I have read some of the thread but didn't have alot of room to work with until we finally got in the new house. I will be ready to try this year since I plan to have a garden & hit the farmers market if needed!

Start a notebook for notes as you read....it's addictive

The notebook is a must. I also keep note on the different recipes that I make so I know what I liked about it & what I didn't or if say it heated up or just the date that I made it so I know when it is cured.
