Yes there are lots of butters; shea, cocoa mango I woulds shy away from land of lakes though.
 
I've always used a cheapo Rival brand. My oldest SB is over 15 years old and my 'newest' is about 6 years old.

You don't want to run the SB continuously until the soap traces. I run it about 30-60 seconds, then hand stir for about 30 seconds, repeat until trace.
