I can usually find lye in a large hardware store, it's sold as a drain opener. Just make sure whatever you buy is labeled 100% lye crystals. I buy the Rooto brand.

I have never been able to find washing soda in a large grocery store. I always find in the small town, mom-and-pop type grocery stores.

we have made homemade soaps before but been many years ago before this last batch we made but i have never made the laundry soap before. but back then we bought red devil lye at bilo. stores don't sell that brand here now and bilo has been resold again and is liquidateing since giant eagle is now buying it. it's why we had such a hard time finding the lye again. the one we by now is from the amish store it is rooto brand it is way cheaper than getting it from lowes. i have never used anything but 100% lye.

so far i have checked bilo, walmart, save alot, amish stores, riverside and can't find washing soda/soda ash. i know what u mean we do have some small stores like that here so i will definately check those out see if anyone here would have it. for those who make their own laundry soap do u use the washing soda or do u substatute it with bakeing soda or do u leave that part out? i normally use oxy clean added to my laundry if i can't find it is leaveing the washing soda out and just keep useing the oxy doing the same thing? what do u think i should do? most people here have never heard of it i'm starting to worry i may not be able to find it. there is 8 of us so if i can find a way to make homemade laundry soap that would be awesome cuz laundry is never ending in this house, lol. thanks for everyones help and imput i really appreciate it!!

If you can't find the washing soda, I would just leave it out. It just boosts the cleaning power of the detergent. Adding Oxy-Clean to the machine every time you do a load will do the same thing.

I think if you buy it in bulk, you need to find the right kind of container to store it in, etc. I buy mine in a bottle from the hardware store and just keep it under the kitchen sink. If I had kids, it would be in a high cabinet.

store it in a very dry place if any moisture gets into it that will cause it to activate. ours always come in a plastic container when we buy it so if bought in bulk i'd recomend keeping it in a lided like 5 gal bucket or similar. i have 5 kids i keep it up in the cupboard above the fridge so it is dry and away from the kids. if it activates it gets very hot and can boil over and be very dangerous. if comes in contact with metal it will start to corode it for that reason i always make soap outside away from everything and use the coldest water that i can when makeing lye soap. if that didn't answer ur questions i can read u what the label says too it is probably more detailed with info but that is what i know off the top of my head.

i found washing soda on ebay but yikes the price of shipping added to cost doesn't seem to help save on money, lol. i'm going to keep searching online see where all i can find it and see what the best deal i can find is and keep checking local stores see what i can find also.
