Hello!
I'm stumped and could use some help/advice.
I have a 1yr 4mo old sex link chicken laying soft eggs that break almost daily when another chicken goes into the nesting box to lay. The nest box hay gets wet and the other chickens end up eating the egg.
She is fed Purina Layena crumbles with calcium and has oyster shell available in the run. I don't have this issue with any of the 7 other hens. No issues with her eggs until about 4 mo ago. The only change is that they free range more starting in the spring.
I've researched endlessly but not sure how to remedy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Below is an
example of the egg from today, soft at one end more solid the rest of the way. Sometimes both ends of the egg are soft and more solid in the middle.

Hi there. Hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

It sounds very much like a personal shell gland issue that may be genetic and not environmental.

If the messy box and others eating it are an issue, I would consider culling or euthanasia. Sex links are notorious for laying issues and I would not expect her to improve. Though MAYBE when daylight decreases and egg production slows a little, it will spend more time by the shell gland and get a better layer?? :fl

I was mistaken, she’s an Asian black Thanks for the lead on the egg gland, doing some research and that’s probably the issue She’s my favorite out of the flock so I’m not ready to cull her quite yet. I just added an extra nesting box to see if i can stop the egg from getting crushed before I can collect eggs in the morning.

You could try supplementing her with extra calcium for a little while and see if there's any improvement. I have one bird that refuses to eat oyster shell so I take a little of the powder residue in the bottom of the oyster shell cup and mix it in with a little mash/fermented feed. She gets a private breakfast in my brooder 3x a week and as soon as she eats it can rejoin the others. Firmed up her shells quite a bit.
