Soft Eggs

One of our 19 month old Leghorns laid one normal egg, one HUGE soft shelled egg and what looked to be just a soft shelled yolk. She laid the normal egg early in the morning and the two soft shelled eggs around 5:30pm within fifteen minutes of each other. She has laid soft shelled eggs in the afternoon a few times before, but never three eggs in one day. We felt so sorry for her, she looked pitiful standing out in the chicken run, plopping out softies.

From what I've read it's a calcium deficiency and to feed them oyster shells.

But I'm super green so don't take me for 100%

All three in one day? I don't know if that's something to worry about. :/

But as for the soft shells, they sometimes happen if the hen isn't getting enough calcium. Some oyster shell, crushed egg shell even, should help with that.

Because she's throwing multiples a day, I'd be inclined to think it's reproductive and not shell quality. If she's stressed out by it (and even if she's not, I probably would) separate her out and make it dark, so she won't produce any more eggs for at least a day. You could wait and see what she does tomorrow, of course, and then decide if it's a fluke or if her system is going haywire for some reason.

She has access to oyster shell and is fed ground up egg shells in a mash for afternoon treats. She laid another huge softie this evening just as it was getting dark and was standing in the coop like she was going to drop another.
