Hey All,

First time posting here!

I’m fairly new to Keeping chickens. I have 10 RIRs that are all around 18 months and this morning while collecting eggs I found a soft shell egg with a some lash and poop. Not sure if this could be salpingitis?

All of my hens seem to be acting normal and are currently out foraging for goodies so I’m not sure which one is the culprit. They all free range and have access to oyster shell, grit, layer pellets and fresh water.

See attached for some pictures.

Hoping whoever it is will be ok.

Thanks in advance!

Brian (Catskill Mountains, NY)

That does appear to look like infection from salpingitis. You can try antibiotics such as the banned for poultry Baytril, but antibiotics may or may not be helpful once lash material is seen. I would look for a hen who is acting a little weak or lethargic, or who has a tail down. Here is where to find Baytril (enrofloxacin) and dosage is 0.25 ml twice a day for a 5 pound hen for 5 days:

If you have a weight, I can help with dosage.

Thanks for the reply!

I’ll do some sleuthing and try to figure out who the sick chick is and in the meantime order some Baytril so I have it on hand. I’ll let you know her weight when I figure out which lady it is. As of now they all have their tails up and are acting normal, but it’s gotta be one of em.
