soft-shelled eggs 5 days in a row...make it 6!

So I brought Chickpea in last night. I really thought she was the one. Nothing in the crate this morning. I went out to let the other girls out and lo and behold, another empty, soft shell in the run. Now I know that belongs to Bandit. She's the only other green shell layer that's not laying like normal. I'll bring Bandit in tonight and see if we get another softie in the morning. Ugh!!!!! I searched the forum and I see that it's normal to occasionally have an irregular, but A WEEK! Give me a break!

I also have a little cutie who is laying shelless eggs! Crazy. The other girls think they are amazingly delicious snacks. I too give oyster shells, greens, mash, & scratch, but after reading the info here will try some vitamins...I have to admit, she is a special needs kinda' gal, so we'll see if anything can help. Emmy Lou never laid "normal" eggs like your hen, so we'll see.

There just might be something to giving the cod liver oil-you need vitaming D to absorb calcium, and perhaps some chickens need more of this nutrient than others to absorb the calcium from oyster shells, etc, especially in the wintertime, when the sun doesn't shine as much to give us that natural vitamin D, as the summer. Cod liver oil has both vitamin A & D. But you will need to look on the back of the bottle-so many companies today remove things out of the Cod Liver Oil to make it appealing to take, that it is not the nutritious remedy that our grandparents used to take. If it doesn't give the amount of Vit. A & D it has in it, don't buy it. You may need to find the correct kind in either the health food section of a grocery store, or an actual health food store.

Tonight we have Bandit as a guest in our crate. She got in the nesting box today for like an hour, but never laid. Of course not, she laid the soft shell this morning. At least I hope so. The eggs are always there by 7:45 am when I let them out, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she lays one in the crate. We'll see! If it's not her, I'm at a loss.

My girl had layed five, all at night or early morning. They were always there by 7:00 ish also. Since I have been giving them the cod liver oil, there has not been another....joe

I had the same problem awhile ago. Oyster shell available in a separate dish. Then I mixed oyster shell in with the feed (DE too) and the problem stopped. I think it was the oyster dust in the feed that straightened them out. Hope that works for you.

We give all the girls raw pumpkin seeds to worm. Also, we mix DE in their food.

Raw pumkins seeds for worming? I hate using anything chemical, and if this is something that works, I'll gladly adopt it.

Where do you buy them? Do grocery stores sell raw pumpkin seeds? Are those called pepitas? A healthfood store must have them, I imagine.
What does the buttermilk do?
