I'm new to chicken raising. I love your site and get most of my info from it. I have a Speckled Sussex that lays soft shelled eggs often (about 2 a week). She is a good producer and about a month ago started sometimes laying 2 eggs in 1 day (1 usually being soft). Then I would go 3 days with just soft eggs. Meanwhile the other hens seem fine. They all get out to free range daily, get Organic feed, and have oyster shell or their own dried egg shell available. Should I be concerned? This hen was attacked last fall by a black bear and we didn't think would survive. She did take longer to lay, but we got a few months of no soft eggs before this began. She otherwise seems very healthy.

Welcome!

My first thought was a need for extra calcium but as she has oyster shell available I am not sure what could be the issue. I recommend posting on the ER Forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures Or Chicken Behaviours & Egg Laying Forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/18/chicken-behaviors-and-egglaying

Good luck!
