I would be concerned of the PVC pipe "off gassing" when it is heated up....I could be off base here.....any thoughts jim?

we had a a few hundred pounds of copper wire a few months ago and we called the recycling center to see the prices for coated and uncoated wire. it was worth our time to strip it the price for "clean wire" was a lot higher...well we were cautioned by the guy at the plant NOT to burn the coating off the wires cause the result is a poisonous smoke... I know you wont be burning the PVC but the heat may get high enough that the PVC may start to break down and releasing some nasty stuff...

good point! i just looked it up and apparently, PVC is nasty stuff in general.

okay...i will keep searching for stuff we have. we don't drink pop or any canned beverages...

miss_jayne...

what about going to the local school or community center and offer to get rid of the can for them...

the school may be really intrested in what you are doing the the science teacher may even offer to have a class make it for you as a project....(wishing is always good..lol)

i was just brainstorming on that. i know a teacher who just might be interested. she is a serious tree hugger, and i am not saying it in a derogatory way. both my older girls had her and i hope my son does.

either that or could i just buy some for the deposit at a store??? hmmm...
and the hits just keep on comin'!

You know...I'm a little worried about the caulk. If you did build this....it would be smart to use a FIRE Retardant caulking/foam used for chimneys. PLUS the plexiglass could very easily melt and warp after one good sunny day. I'd use the glass....NEXT is the fact that when it snows in New England we've got 4 feet at least on the ground all winter...so leaving this on the ground to dig out every winter would definitely be a chore.

Maybe I'll make up a small mock up and try it out with my kids...

I LOVE Science in the morning!

you know, you just hit on a great idea! a small one would be fine for a trial. i have a converted play house as one of my coops. would be a perfect trial set up.

how hot does ya water get in ya house,, and theres alot of pvc pipe used,,, and the "bad smoke" comes from it burning and giving off smoke, at a very high temp, its like a cigerette, if you warm it up, it isnt bad, but burn it and its bad. i cant imagine the pvc on a 90 degree day gtetting much hotter then 130 or so,, and there will always be cool air comming in,,,, ( sorry took so long,, had to let the birdies out lol

you know this is why i love this group....

we get one idea and then everyone brings their own 2 cents to the table...and now we have a working brainstorm group...
