I never suggested that building solar panels would save you a 'boat load' of money and 'save the US economy'. I also never suggested the OP build a 1 KW solar panel, as a matter of fact, I stated that "There is an auction right now on
ebay for 1KW of tabbed solar cells for $350.00. Obviously to much for a light and a single fan, but you get the idea".
The panel they need (50W) should be right around $50-$60, maybe $75 for the components. To buy one on
ebay ranges from $100 to $200. At $150 for a purchased panel, they would save around $75. In my opinion that is enough to justify learning about what they are doing. It may not be theirs, and I assume it is not yours, but this thread is not about you it is about the OP, they are looking for information, not personal sarcastic attacks, exaggerations and false arguments. They are looking for information, personal experience and quite possibly the reasoning behind it.
For what they need, most likely a 35w or 50w panel, and a two to three battery bank, would more than suffice. That size system is quite obtainable as a DIY project, especially if they have kids, neighborhood children that may need some mentoring, or just friends who would like to learn and help out. It would provide an excellent teaching opportunity for a great many skills to be passed down, most importantly of all, self reliance.
My suggestions were not directed towards you, you chose to fire the first shot, you questioned my statements and I answered and gave you my reasoning and philosophy. If you disagree, fine I respect that. But exaggerating and creating false scenarios is completely unwarranted. The concept of this site is the sharing of ideas, personal experience and sometimes the philosophy behind it so the individual requesting it can make a decision that fits their situation best. Often those roads of advise cross, and at that point the individual seeking the advise, has to make a decision. You have a difference of opinion, and rather than make a logical argument you chose to attack, belittle and exaggerate. How about you offer up constructive advise and personal experience to the OP and leave the personal attacks to PM's so the OP's thread is not polluted by this garbage. Or better yet, state your personal opinions and respectfully disagree, I may have actually learned from your experiences as well as others who have taken the time to provide input and read this thread.
But lets just get one thing PERFECTLY CLEAR - make no mistake about it, my only goals here are to: gain knowledge, seek advise, understand the philosophies behind the decisions, have a little fun, and do my absolute best to help others. It would be refreshing if a number of others would consider the same philosophy.

I believe for the size system you would require, building your own panel is going to save some money, familiarize you with the intricacies and nuances of solar generated electricity, and quite possibly provide you with skills that will be very valuable in the future.
But that is just my opinion. And please excuse the departure of your thread.
Thomas423 could you provide a little more information on your solar system? We desperately need to expand and I always prefer personal experience.
