If your area's laws limit the number of chickens you can have to 4 to 6 chickens, then you could build a 4x8 coop that would make good use of the lumber and still give your chickens plenty of room. On the other hand, if you are allowed more chickens, build the 8x8 coop to allow for you eventually wanting more chickens.
Very interesting about your ordnance. At least they do allow for Roosters! If your budget allows, go for the bigger coop. You never know when you might have to keep them in there longer than they normally wood be. Bad weather or some other reason. You just never know.
Is this your city's ordinance....or.....?
I'm pretty sure 17 but nobody is gonna come out and enforce that ruleIs this your city's ordinance....or.....?
Sooo.... how many birds can you have?
Was thinking of doing solar to keep heat tape running on water in winter and to power the coop door... would this system work do you think?Hi, I've has solar panels on my coop since I built it, about 4 years, the panels keep a battery back charged that runs the lights, exhaust fans and small heater, Its a 12V system ALL purchased from Harbor freight Tools. there are many dealers that sell solar equipment but for the backyard hobbyist Harbor Freight worked for me
Brand name is Thunderbolt

They also sell the stuff to link multiple systems together to maintain a bigger battery bank
Good luck
sure just have to have a battery bank that has enough power to support the heat tape. If the heat tape is a 12 V product it should work fine with a few batteries together. Was thinking of doing solar to keep heat tape running on water in winter and to power the coop door... would this system work do you think?
