Soldier Gifts for Those In Iraq....AWESOME pics!!!!

They love to get blankets.

Dh said it gets to be like 40* there and has said he has stood around a burn barrel to get warm.

He never had a pillow either come to find out. He said he used his coat wadded up.

I've also heard they like the looooong tan boot laces...since the sand can wear them down and they break frequently.

I got a tip from a mom of a soldier that said she makes cookies and takes a straw and puts it in the plastic bag...uses her vacuum cleaner hose and sucks out most of the air and makes vacuum sealed bags. Then she pops popcorn or buys some already popped and stuffs it in bags and puts it all around the cookies for padding or "peanuts" to protect the cookies from being broke and give an added treat.

When it is the rainy season dh says the sand is like mud and he has had his boots get stuck in the mud several times.

Dh likes crossword puzzles and such too. I bet others would like those kind of games.

He's always talking about baby wipes that come in the travel size bags. He always has a pack in one of his pockets so they can wipe things down.

He talks about plastic baggies---ziploc too....I know they've been mentioned before but I think they should be mentioned again. We take stuff like that for granted.

I've sent honey too. So he can flavor his tea or coffee...or put it on crackers. It's a special treat. He has gotten multiple bottles of honey.

That's all I can think of now.

Thanks one and all...hey, by the way....got an email yesterday from dh...said he got pinned the other day....so it is official....dh is a Sgt.
Kinda cool huh?

me,
g

Im sorry Cass...

I just saw this post...

Yes, we have 2 TV rooms... and a dvd player... our old one broke, but one of my friends donated a brand new one to us!! Yeah!!!

So, yes, we do, the chapel has a dvd library, and folks just sign them out when they want to watch a movie.

Well I stuffed a new/unopened copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the box with the popcorn and other goodies.

I know Halloween's already over, but I thought since I got the boxes out on Halloween, it would be a cute movie to send.

maplesky tell Wayne congratulations on his new rank...

Athena I gave your DD's Email to Andrew...he had today off and was on his way to the library to use the internet... so he may drop her a line...I know he has his own blankets at Bragg but I dont know if he can pack them to take with him... I guess I will ask that question...I am a quilter so plan on sending him a quilt and think I may try to get a few friends to help make a few for others over there...He is going to be close to Turkey so really up in northern Iraq... I don't know what side of the wire he will be on...I pray it will be a fairly safe area...He will be quite farther North than Balad...
Do you know of other organizations like yours? Pam

Pam,..

I don't know of any other organization uniquely like ours in the AOR.. I do know, all chaplains like to get donations so they can support their units. We have chaplains for all units on a base, and they like to carry small things to eat. I mean, after all, cookies and ministry go hand in hand. Like,.. our flightline chaplain likes to bring bottles of Gatorade to hand out. They each have their own unique deal.

Also, there is the Red Cross and USO who have offices, and they offer items as well..(food and toiletry) that troops can take. But, I think they are located in the much bigger bases. And, they offer mostly generic items.. whereas Troys stocks what you send.

Many of the FOBs rely on mobile exchanges to replenish the items troops outside the wire need. The problem is, if your FOB is on the last few stops of the truck... there is nada on there...

That is why, we also send to FOBs...

But in order to get items from Troys sent to a FOB, they need to email me or a Balad chaplain, and request items, and I ship, within a week or so...if I have items on hand, and if shipping is allowed.
I say that, because of lockdowns..

Pam, If Drew needs anything while he is deployed, have him email me what they need, and I will forward to them, what I can.

Note: I requetsed a moderator make this into a sticky, but so far, no moderators has responded to my request.

Maybe that would seem like an endorsement, although I can't see the bias in that, but who knows, not my site and I'm ok with whatever they decide. Just "subscribe" to this thread and/or someone post on it everyday and it will stay visible

DD has taken this on as a community service project and the collections have begun in our PT office and gym. We will try to get out packages monthly. People can be very generous when the need is presented. Glad to hear that you send to others in need. I'll share that info and that should increase the giving. DD is hoping to place two more boxes for collections as well.

I don't know if Mosul is out side the wire or not...he doesnt have a lap top yet so he wouldnt be able to email you with requests...We have a good size family plus our church family so hopefully we will be able to handle at least his platoon but I would like to take care of his company as well...He already knows that I plan on shipping as much as possible...

good idea scrambled egg!

Actually, someone else had suggested it, and I just put in my second...yea, it does sound like an edorsement.. but that was not my intent... I don't do any of this for me.. or get paid for it or anything like that.
I am strictly a volunteer in this effort....

I know that Athena
