Solo Nail Trimming

Any advice. Everything I’ve seen is about two people doing it. Surely it can be done alone.

  • Put bright headlamp on head.
  • Pluck victim off roost at night.
  • Wrap in towel with head and wings covered and feet sticking out.
  • Take to brightly lit location.
  • Put victim in lap and trim nails. Have styptic powder available in case you get overzealous.
  • Unwrap and replace on roost!
:D

I don't trim nails. My birds free range daily nearly all day long. The constant scratching keeps them naturally trimmed.

Thanks for that. I have my first flock and they are 10 months old. I have been dreading the idea of trimming nails even though I haven't seen any long nails. I have deep litter in the run and coop and they free range a few hours every day. They scratch around and make huge holes in their run. I will be happy if I don't have to trim nails!

It simply depends on their temperament. I do all of mine alone, but then again mine are pretty docile. But YES, it can most definitely be done by yourself!

Good luck!

I do mine alone. But I have bantams. They can be restained with one hand lol

Some birds nails grow faster than others and softer ground makes a difference whether or not birds will need their nails trimmed.
