Solving a Hawk Problem

This topic has been covered so many times. Just do a quick search above on the blue navigation bar for hawk or bird(s) of prey. It is completely illegal to mess with them let alone kill them. That means you can't even throw rocks at them even. Like has been said already, they do far more good than harm. Play defense, that's all you need to do. If you take the time and run the fishing line and hang CDs form it, you will never have a hawk problem. It takes an afternoon and you are only out a few dollars. You can take it down when the hawk learns there is a barrier. Easy and within the law. Plus you are helping to preserve a natural balance in the wilderness around your home. OK now I will step don from the soap box. Next in line please hop up onto it.

I was leaving my birds outside in the evening to let them range and get out of the coop. It worked fairly well for several weeks. However, my luck ran out a few nights ago. A hawk, presumably, got one of my hens. She never went in the coop for the night, and we found a couple of clumps of feathers the next day. This is not the hawk's fault, this is my fault. I only did it because my run and aviary netting is not up yet. Well, its about to be, i have to put the wire up and the netting and then the chickens can go outside. Id love to let them free range, but thats just possible to do without loss of assets. The pen is 25x50' so, its free range as far as the birds are concerned.

Im not killing a hawk for trying to survive. Its what they do.

A hawk is a natural predator. If you don't want your chickens to become prey/dinner then protect them. You need a run of some sort thats covered. Period. :thun

I agree with above. I get so angry at the ignorance out there. If you're gonna kill it by God you'd better eat it.

RAINMAN!!! i will repost this for your sake.

“Unless and except as permitted by regulations made as hereinafter provided, it shall be unlawful at any time, by any means or in any manner, to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture, or kill, possess, offer for sale, sell, offer to barter, barter, offer to purchase, purchase, deliver for shipment, ship, export, import, cause to be shipped, exported, or imported, deliver for transportation, transport or cause to be transported, carry or cause to be carried, or receive for shipment, transportation, carriage, or export, any migratory bird, any part, nest, or egg of any such bird, or any product, whether or not manufactured, which consists, or is composed in whole or in part, of any such bird or any part, nest or egg.”

The punishment is a fine up to $15,000 and up to 6 months in jail.

As i have said before, my husband, who is a game warden, and has federal jurisdiction on federally protected animals (i.e. any raptor) is getting really tired of reading things like this on this board. Please inform yourself and stop advocating illegal activities.

it is a risk we take with owning chickens, all you can do is try to protect them as best you can!

Why can I literally have 15 squirrels in my pecan tree, several running around on the ground and one or two traveling on the electric wire AND at least three or four rabbits munching on apples under the apple trees and the red tail has to swoop down on my chickens??? IN THEIR RUN!!

Am I at fault when they get tangled in my poultry netting and die?

I saw a show on bison on PBS last night and the federal gov't allows the slaughter of wild bison when they leave a national park because they may threatened the health of cattle, so I can't protect my flock now because?
Sounds like double talk to me.

you are not at fault if they get tangled in the netting. if it is still alive, you would have to call your local game warden or us fish and wildlife rep so that they could attempt to save it. if you just left it there to die, then yes, there is a possibility you could get in trouble. the show you saw last night is propaganda, i have seen it. the land outside the park is contracted out for cattle grazing purposes, and has been for some time. those bison were re-introduced into that area. there is no fine line with raptors however. you mess with them, at all, you have broken a federal law and felonies are no fun. you lose a lot of your rights the second you are convicted of a felony. its really not worth it. buy a dog, get a rooster, encourage other wild birds to live on your property. thats all you can do.

OK, thats where i draw the line. If it gets tangled in my net, cannot free itself, and it dies....screw it, its going in the creek. Im not calling the freakin' authorities over something like that.

So send me to prison.
