I have australian shepards there wonderful at putting the birds up at night and there very protective. But fact of the matter is They Don't have wings and cannot stop an air attack.
Several things you can try are Hanging old CD's From Tree branches or even nailing them to the trunk Shiny side out. Also I keep all my friendly birds here happy and well feed like my crows mockingbirds, barn swallows, Crows, these have kept the daily hawks at bay were flooded with redtail hawks.
You can also Buy fake owl and or hawk decoys those supposibly detour air assailents. And since it is illegal to kill an Owl I found Using a shotgun Loaded with epson salt really really helps alot. its my new disperser.

I'm going to have too try this nightgaurd! I'm going crazy dealing with all these darn owls! It sounds like a great way to protect my birds and not hurt the wild ones either. In our state it is very much illegal. So sorry to hear of the loss of your roo. The missing head sounds like a opossum, coon, or skunk. I to have had owls fly right in the coop! Putting netting over the top helped solve that. We even put some chicken wire stretched over the top sense my guineas like to fly up on it and were tearing the netting. Best of luck!! They are by far the biggest pain I have had yet in seven years! Oh, and on the dogs... My neighbors have Aussies and they have come in my yard and killed chickens. I have Pembroke Welch Corgis and they will herd but not hurt them as long as they are trained not to from pups. Also helps to have no more then two. When I bred them they liked to heard in groups and some of the males would sometimes hurt or even kill chickens. So I have two Corgis and one mixed mutt that about 75 lbs. They work as a team. The corgis pen it, and get the bigger all wound up. The mutt then pounces and snaps whatever s neck. Best wishes
