Not too sure on the amounts of feed they have posted. The first few weeks in the brooders they are going to waste alot of food, just as chicks do. For each 160 quail we go through right @ 150# per week. This is after the 3-4 week stage when they can be put into our 1X2 wire pens. Our feeders are on the outsides of the pens, where they cannot scratch or try to dust,so there is very little waste.Quail need the constant feed, not fed once or twice a day like other poultry, and a higher protein feed, not basic starter/layer. I go through about 300# of layer pellets @ 11.95 bag per month for about 150 chickens compared to 1200# of gamebird layer crumbles for 320 quail @ $17.90 bag per month. That's $72 chicken/$430 Quail per month in feed.
The health benefits, however, are better.More protein, less cholesterol. Boosts metabolism,Sexual drive, immune system. Plenty of good properties that chicken eggs just don't offer.
Also I feed several varieties of Coturnix. The main pens that I used for the calculations was strictly Jumbo Browns and Jumbo Texas A&M's.I'm sure the tiny original pharoahs,English, etc may eat less because they are less than half the size.Even my other varieties are of the larger sizes.
Coturnix can be very screwy about laying.Weather, moving, seasonal changes, environmental changes.Even drafts will affect them.A dog barking too much will stress them.
Our average coturnix eggs are about the size of my OEGB eggs....
