Some keets I hatched recently

The Pintos are a new color (well a newly developed degree of Pied, actually), available from TheGuineaFarm.com (probably thru other breeders too, not sure). This is a pic of Pinto Keets

Gorgeous adorable little keets!!!!!... I'd love to hatch my own (from my Ms Poopstain Hen, lol) because I really do not want to order some and have to have them shipped all this way. (It stresses ME out, and I think it's cruel to the keets!).

I'm anxiously awaiting your hatch update, hope you hatch what you are hoping for! Out of 70 eggs, odds should be good!

Sorry to hear about your flooding, it's not that bad here, but it's wet and raining, and extra muddy, with all the horses and goats making it worse. I have 125 soggy Guineas complaining 24/7 about it. They are still happy to be let out, and will run around in the rain and mud... but I hate seeing all my pretty, light colored birds all mucked up

I have no idea what might show up in my upcoming hatches... most of the flock are partially pearled; there's 4 Chocolate Hens, 6 or so Coral Blue Hens, 2 Buff Hens, a Pied Porcelain, a Pied Coral Blue, maybe a Pied Royal Purple, the Poopstain Hen (lol), a Pied Cinnamon, a Pied Brown... and for males there's 2 Buffs, 3 Coral Blues, 2 Opalines, a Pied Cinnamon, a Pied Brown, maybe a Pied Royal Purple, and the 2 Pied Powder Blues... I have no clue who is laying (or breeding) yet, but I am getting between 8 and 12 eggs a day from that pen, even thru the crappy weather (but on average only about a 50% fertility rate so far). So who knows?

I am hoping for a few "new to me" colors at least. I wanted to pull the fully pearled birds from that flock, but I didn't get an extra pen built as planned. Oh well, maybe next yr

With as many colors as I have, and as diverse as the backgrounds of my breeders are, I'd imagine IF any Pintos show up... they could be ANY color. We'll see tho.

I can't believe I am looking fwd to more keets already... it's all your fault bemba lol! I had a grip. 'Til I saw your pics!!!!

Uh oh, my links don't seem to be working in the posted message, but look ok when I go into the Reply Edit? Hmmm... a glitch in BYC's giddy-up maybe? Let me know if the links work or don't work for you guys

Peeps that guinea is superb, so wish we have them here......

Boy this weather we are having sucks, poor babies arent liking it one bit. Like Bemba said my guineas are just a dense with the rain. Up in the middle of a roost out in the open with pouring rain & a dry sheltered shed not being used......

Speaking of which, I have a lake down the back & the pekin ducks & sebs refused to swim thru it to be put away, like seriously why are water birds scared of water.

Good luck on the hatch Bemba i got some photos mms"d to me today you would just adore. ;) Going to aks nicely if I can put them on BYP

Wow peeps, sounds like you should hatch some stunning new colours!!! So crossing the colours do you get non standard colours? Colour combos? Can you tell the colour of them when keets? I noticed that some of the colours hatch with white wings etc.... but turn out non pied! Strange!!

Checked the eggs this morning...... We have chipping everywhere, at least 30 so far, so by tomorrow morning I will finally get to meet my newest additions!!!!!

Tried to attach some pics of my peachicks but it won't work :( I'm still not used to the new BYC, Where are my uploads LOL.

Silly question, course!!! Some of the eggs have hatched, pearl pied and some lav pieds...... Not overly excited about the ones hatched so far :( keep fingers crossed for me that some are super pieds......

Yep deb is right... little white shrug sweaters, lol. The keets that hatch with broken lines on their heads and white wings all the way to the shoulders are our partially-pearled varieties over here... Royal Purples, Bronzes, Chocolates, Blondes, Buffs, Coral Blues, Lite Blues, and Opalines will all hatch with white wings, but lose the white within a couple weeks when they feather out with their first set of juvenile feathers, (unless they are Pied of course, then the wings or at least the flight feathers will stay white, then their chests eventually start to grow white feathers).

I'm still learning how all the recessive and dominant genetics work in Guineas, and believe me, it's been a struggle for me, lol... I can read and read and read about genetics until my eyes cross and I get a migraine, but it just never really fully clicks for me

I'm getting a little better knowledge of what is needed from each parent bird (which pairs of genes) to create specific colors of keets tho. But with my mixed flocks, with their varied backgrounds, I still end up doing a lot of head scratching and wondering how I ended up with certain colors sometimes, lol. (Where's rollyard, he's really good at explaining how the genetics work, lol). Crossing colors can have different outcomes, there can be a slight difference in shade variation but they usually do not create new colors that are not already one of our already common varieties that have been developed and are sold by the major breeders over here tho). And no we don't ever hatch color combos, other than the different colors of Pieds.

In my flocks usually whatever color is dominant between the breeding pair is often what shows up the most in my hatches, but I can and do get varied hatches with a lot of colors if both parents carry the same hidden recessive genes in their backgrounds. This season I am hoping for 2 colors that I don't have yet, out of my partially-pearled birds... I'm hoping my Buff and Opaline males will breed with my Chocolate Hens and give me some Blonde keets, (since the Buff and Opaline both carry the tan genes in lighter versions than the Chocolate Hen) and that my Opalines males will breed with my Coral Blue Hens and give me some Lite Blue keets (since the Opaline carries the lighter version of the blue gene than the Coral Blue Hen does). But it doesn't always work out the way I hope lol, since all my birds have such varied backgrounds (and were hatched out of mostly fully-pearled, mixed colors and Pied flocks) plus they can breed with whoever they choose at this point (and there are 5 fully-pearled Pied birds in this flock too, and fully-pearled is dominant over partially-pearled). So who knows, I may not get any partially pearled keets at all,

Guess I'll find out in the upcoming weeks tho. The hidden recessive genes are both good and frustrating at the same time, lol.

I won't mind tho, I don't plan to keep that many keets this year, but I do love the mixed hatches and watching each little keet zipping the top off the egg and popping it's head out and then I get to figure out what color it is (while it's still wet), if it's Pied and how Pied it will be. I mainly breed for variety/lots of pretty colors, but of course I'm always hoping for a few certain colors to show up in the hatches. And yes, I can usually tell what color the keets are at hatch by their color and markings, either right away if it's a color I've hatched a lot of, or as soon as they are fluffed and dried and I can see the colors and markings better. Sometimes I get a little stumped because we have so many colors that are so close in shade (especially the keets in the tan/buff gene family), and it gets a little confusing.

30 pipped eggs!!!!! Yep you'll have keets any time!!! I expect a lot of pics you know! (I wanna see those baby Peas too!!!). Posting pics here on BYC is much easier now, once you get used to it... There is an Insert Image icon in right side the tool bar on top of the reply editor, it looks like a little picture, and it's next to the little film strip icon (that's for uploading video!). Every time you click that Insert Image icon to attach a pic, it will give you the option to upload an image from your Computer, or to upload one by inserting/importing a direct URL link to any image that you have stored at an image hosting site. And it gives you the option to save a copy to your Uploads album. (You don't have to save a copy to your album if you don't want to tho, it will still attach the pic to the message). Your uploads are in your profile, click the My Profile link up top in the page header, then scroll down on your profile page until you see Your Photos, they will be in your default album. But if that just totally confused you... just watch this tutorial video, it should help you: Inserting Pics on the New BYC Below the video are screen caps and helpful info as well.

Good luck with your hatches!!!
