Some people are rude!

A similar "non-animal" incident happened to me this weekend. Someone posted that they were giving away 5 gallon glass jugs for FREE. Well, I was the 2nd person that emailed them about wanting the glass jugs. The person who was giving away the FREE 5 gallon glass jugs was going back and forth with the 1st person that emailed them and was wishy washy with when she could pick them up. She initially said that she could get them one day and then changed her mind. Well the person giving the glass jugs away contacted me and asked me when could I get the glass jugs because the 1st person was too wishy washy and he didn't feel that she was committing to picking up the FREE glass jars. I told him that as soon as he emailed me his address, I would be picking up my keys and backing out of my drive way. Needless to say, I was at his house exactly 37 minutes after he gave me his address. Picked up the 5 gallon glass jugs and they are sitting in my house. When the seller or giver says when can you get it. I say NOW or I pick it up within 24 hours! Of course everyone can't pick things up at that moment or within 24 hours but that is just what I practice. Because of my practices of being timely, 1 guy that I have received stuff from on Craigslist will email me before he posts an ad online wanting to know if I want the Free item or the item that he is selling. That means a lot to me.

This 5 gallon glass jug is priced anywhere from $28.00 to $40.00 online. I was NOT passing up this FREE deal.

Nice find!! I got an ice cream maker that way once.

You really do need to be a little more specific, but he did seem rude to me. I can see how 'send a deposit' means 'wait a few days for internet funds to clear and then I still might pick up the birds'... might is a hard word to hear from a seller. Might is not will, y'know? That "might" have been his reasoning.

I offer to buy something I order it, I get a time and a date and... I even call if I'm running late.

(and that's how you get an award winning blue ribbon trio for sixty bucks)

I've dealt with WAY too many people that wanted me to hold birds for them and then they change the dates over and over on me. Now my practice is to tell them I have the item and it will be here until it's sold. I do NOT hold anything for anybody, whoever hands me the money first gets the item. Period.

Speaking of THIS, this is actually what I always assume so if I can't pick up a bird... if you have an iPhone and a banking application for your bank you can send the funds AND press the home/on key at the same time to take a screenshot of it. For me it shows which account I sent from, how much, to whom, what date/time it was processed and the reference number for the bank.

Then I send them that screenshot. It's not obviously 100% I'm not scamming them... but it's a pretty hard one to forge and it has all the details, including usually their business name which pops up when I type in their account details. (that they never told me).

It's a great way to pay for something and secure it without having to go over right that minute.

As a CL addict, I can support all of your comments. (From the buying and selling perspective.) You have to be clear and concise with people and expect the same back, or don't deal with them! I have also gotten many great deals and bargains and gave-away/sold the same to people. My husband is forever waiting in the barn for some wishy-washy punk to show up from him attempting to sell tools on ebay. If they are vague or unclear in the emails, I won't make an agreement to meet them. We've all waited on a CL flake, its no fun.

If there is a possibility that you may have a conflict that day, I wouldn't even offer it as a possibility. " I am interested in buying two of your Turkeys. I could pick them up at noon on Saturday. If that is not convenient for you please let me know what date or time would work with your schedule..."

MIGHT and IF will get you in trouble everytime with an experienced CL. We've all been burned.

I have both bought and sold on craigslist and had people change the date/time they are coming. If this was the first time you changed the time/date you were coming, then he was unreasonable. If this is the 2nd or 3rd time you changed on them, that's a different story.

I would never treat a buyer on craigslist the way that guy treated you, even if they did change their mind and at least let me know they had changed it. The ones I think are jerks/flakes are the ones that say they're coming in the next day or two and then you never hear from them again.... THOSE are the crappy buyers people don't want to deal with. I would still deal with someone who at least sent me a note and let me know they weren't coming or had to change and still offered to make a deposit. You didn't leave this guy twisting in the wind, which you could have done but chose better not to.

I hope you find someone better/nicer to buy your birds from in the future.

If I were a seller I don't believe I would have interpreted your response like that... Things come up in life and you have to reschedule.

And you didn't say you didn't want them and were willing to send a deposit for his time and inconvenience just to show your commitment. So, what are you going to do? Are you going ahead and getting his turkeys? Kinda a strange situation to be in as a buyer.

What about the people who live quite a distance? I would like to know the item will still be there when I arrive after an hour or 2 of driving. Gas is not cheap. Many times before setting out I call to make sure the item is still available and let them know I will be arriving in an hour and a half - 2 hrs. I would be some upset if someone local got there a half hour before me and bought my item.

I'm pretty disgusted by how many people can defend this persons behavior and claim that you are the rude one.

Since when did "i MIGHT be able to make it tomorrow " become a concrete thing? If he needed them gone so badly he should have told you that you could have them unless someone was able to pick them up for sure before you with full payment. I've done that before and No it is not a gigantic inconvenience and if someone else is able to do so then I send the first person a POLITE e-mail letting them know that the birds are gone.

I have been stiffed many times and would still NEVER make someone feel as crappy a he made you feel because you had something come up. I am right now trying to rehome a silkie rooster for free and have been flakes on three times in the last two weeks. I REFUSE to ever send an email like that EVER. I am 22 years old and I'm just plain sick of my elders telling me my generation has no respect.
