Just tell her that bugs are probably falling in the chicken mash and getting mixed with with processed feed anyway ... just like hot dogs! Honestly, there are a lot of bugs that HUMANS can eat and it's just cultural norms that prevent us from utilizing this protein source.

I swear my mother is the only one so far who hasn't had a chicken story from their childhood. She grew up in NYC. I've had nothing but curiousity and interest from neighbors.

It's actually perfectly legal to own chickens in NYC and it always has been, I don't think there are even limits on numbers of them but they don't allow roosters. I'm surprised your mom didn't run into a few chicken stories hallerlake!

They may have been legal, but my grandparents didn't have any. My father also grew up in NYC. His chicken stories come from visiting his grandparents in Ireland.

I noticed the new regs require the coop be someplace it can't be seen. I know some coops are strictly utilitarian, but some are awfully cute.

I heard of this and actually rescued a baby Roo from a gentleman in Hamden that lived in rural part. His neighbors would call on him daily about all his birds. The neighbor was so far from him and the Roo was actually keep in a cage in the garage. This Town is sooo ridiculous and I knew that this ban of chickens wasn't going to happen for the simple fact that the City of New Haven allows Hens. Helloooo it is like a city as NYC is sections and if they allow it so should Hamden. Thank goodness my town isn't joining the ban wagon and if they did the town would be down there up in arms since just about every person owns a flock.

My Dad grew up in NJ and they raised chickens. Highland Park (exit 10). Actual farm. Bantams.

He hates chicken. There is no way you can make him chicken, that he has not had it a thousand times.

Some of you need to be careful about making LARGE, SWEEPING and BROAD categorizations...Like uptight suburban yuppies...another said thank God I dont live in CT anymore..blah blah..

The truth is there are idiots and uneducated people everywhere and they BREED...We are all Americans (at least most here on this site I think) and every state that I have been to (and I've been to more than half of them) have wonderful things about them and equally wonderfull people and all have not so wonderfull things and not so wonderfull people. The point is when we paint everyone with a broad brush, you do the SAME thing that is part of the problem...spreading unknowledgable propoganda JUST LIKE SOME THE COMMENTS YOU ARE CRITIZING...the irony is you are doing the SAME exact thing by commenting about the comments in the same fashion... think about it...

Love..
Uptight suburban yuppie living in rural Hebron, CT. God I WISH I CAN GET OUT OF CT!.

....LOL!!!!!!!!!

every city town has lots wild birds so having a few chickens doesn't change anything, it's just another bird. most people will not be having chickens even if allowed, so actual numbers over all will be small, besides we suposedly live in socalled free countries so we should be able to have a few "pets"because they are "pets" not "livestock" livestock are animals used comercially on a farm and a few animals dosen't make a farm
