Some people just don't understand

hey, I actuallydid that last year for my solstice tree - it looked great! (we decorate that way anyway - our taste is obviously different to yours) seriously, though, not a satan worshipper - can't worship someone you don't believe exists.

I think a black tree with skulls would be kinda cool...

Look at the bright side you can worship solstice twice a year. Seems unfair to not worship the other one in the southern hemisphere. Maybe you did not know it existed.

chickened: different tree for summer solstice

Regardless of which tree in which color and with whatever ornaments ... my cats would still wreck it.

no tree for summer solstice, they're pretty enough outside where we can enjoy them!

One thing I have been wondering about in recent years: Just how did we get to this point where the retail spending frenzy has come to be viewed as "normal"? How could this coworker come to the mindset of calling the OP's husband a "satanist" (wrongly) because the OP does not put up a christmas tree (which is definitely a non-christian tradition)? I certainly see a need for extra lighting at this time of year, but how have we as a society and culture come to the point of going so far overboard? I certainly like the idea of just saying "We DO christmas, we just don't BUY our christmas."

ebwy2 - no trees in the house at all ... I have 3 furry feline monsters who have proven in years past they are quite capable of destroying such things for their amusement (especially ornaments on the artificial tree). Trees are not only better outside and in the ground, but they're also safer.

I agree. And, if you look at the history of the holiday, Christmas wasn't really celebrated that much in the world until the 1800s and even then, it was a bigger holiday in the Europe than elsewhere in the world. Before that, Easter was the big Christian holiday. I think movies and books have made it grow to a bigger and bigger holiday, especially over the last century.

ETA: Christmas wasn't even an official holiday in the US until 1870.

Sounds like your husbands view of Christmas is nothing more than the gift giving. The Co-worker didn't look at Christmas as just the gift giving.

I think you're doing a wonderful thing. You are making your family and your faith the center of the holiday. That is noble no matter what others say. I think the memories you make with your spouse and children will last with them a lot longer then a bunch of toys/games that will eventually beak or wear out down the line.
