Somebody stole our hay!

Good grief I am so sorry. Folks are getting hard up I swear. I had my alfalfa/timothy hay getting eaten by a neighbor's cows all summer through a couple of weeks ago. It gets frustrating at least I could shoot the thieves had the owner not moved them and kept them out of barn, sadly you do not have that option.

we had a bunch of hay fires out here in august and september... punk kids lighting the hay on fire just for fun, hundreds of bales burned over 2 counties. I heard they were caught, and there haven't been any more hay fires in about a month. in an area where hay prices have near doubled since july, and it's been dry enough that many folks won't get their normal fall cutting, or *any* fall cutting, its just a shame to have that hay not only lost to the farmer/rancher, but wasted altogether.

I'm voting for public flogging as punishment. plus restoration of the loss, maybe by hand-raking / stacking the hay for the farmers whos hay they burned. my ex loose-stacked hay a couple of summers as a teen and he says it was about the hardest he's ever worked in his life.

I have breakfast on the weekends with the local old-boy farmers and there've been some hay thefts, along with some equipment thefts here. recently one thought he had the burglers penned in - they were backed up to his barn when he drove in and locked the road gate behind himself... said they saw him come in and took off chrashed right through the road gate... broke his barn door and the gate but didn't get anything else. probably cost them a new grill, bumper and lights on their truck too. don't know if they've been caught yet. more public flogging candidates, I think.

if he'd been standing in the drive when they tore out, I think he *could* have shot them and I'm pretty sure nobody at the sherrif's office would have said a thing.

So sorry to hear that. Nothing like having something stolen from your home, it's so invasive. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't stealing it to bring to Cali. We are paying $14.50+ for Bermuda in approx 85lb bales and $18.50 to $21.00 for Alfalfa in 80 to 90lb bales. Thank goodness I am only feeding one horse now!
