somebody's eating eggs, but who?

i would use Chinese HOT mustard if it was me

then they wont ever touch an egg again

Knowing my chickens, they'd probably love it! I haven't found anything they won't eat, except a slimy lettuce leaf that accidentally happens to be in their greens.

How do you put the mustard in the small hole? An eye-dropper could take a while!

Chickens cant taste/feel hot. You can give them hot peppers and they love them! Actually its good for them..its a natural de-wormer.

Good to know. Thanks!

I don't have a lot of faith in the nasty egg solution. It is pretty hard to find something chickens dislike.

It is best to put old light bulbs, door knobs and golf balls in the nest. When they peck on enough junk without getting anything to eat, they will get frustrated and quit.

It used to be when we had lots of chickens, the egg eaters just self nominated themselves for Sunday dinner. However, now that we just have small flocks every chicken is needed for egg laying.

Search for the the roll away nest on this site. The nest box is inclined so that the egg gently rolls back under a false back of the box away from the hen. If she can't get to it, she can't eat it.

I made mine out of an old kitchen cabinet that I found in the alley. The back of the cabinet became the front of the nest. I set it up facing into the coop. Now we can check for eggs without going into the coop.

Sometimes egg eating is a sign that something is wrong in the coop. Are the hens getting enough greenery? They love weeds and grass. Do they have enough oyster shell? Are they over crowded? If the egg of the lowest ranking hen is being eaten, they need more room.

Try putting some charcoal into the chicken yard. There is something about charcoal that they need or want. We used to put the ashes from the wood stove into the chicken yard for their dust baths. This also keeps them lice free.

If the problem continues, put small children to watch and see who is the culprit. It keeps them busy and out of trouble. At one time, I thought we had an egg eater, but the kids saw an old tom cat trying to break the egg.

Good Luck,

Rufus
