There have been a lot of points made about how there are a lot of people who are dirty and have bad habits and most dogs are not as bad as some of them, I actually agree. I love dogs, I've known plenty of dogs who behave very well and really wouldn't be a nuisance, even in a grocery store. I let my dogs in my kitchen, but I'm not so sure I'd let 'yours' into my kitchen. ((that's a general 'yours' meaning the whole world's dogs))

The rule is there though to protect us, and the store, from people who have no manners. It's hard enough for store employees to keep the place clean, and we'd all be complaining about it if it weren't. Picking and choosing which dogs are well mannered, is just too much to ask. The health dept codes are there to protect our food, what we do with it when we get it into our own kitchen is our business.

I understand why the rules are there.. I was just stating my opinion ..

And pointing out that guide dogs arent the only service dogs and they come in all shapes and sizes..

That is the Federal law. The California laws are much stricter. It truly delinates what is and is not a service dog.

since I let my dog into my kitchen, where I prepare food, it's hard to get grossed out by the idea of dogs in a grocery store, where they prepare food. I did see a baby yesterday in the supermarket running around -literally, running everywhere - barefoot and wearing nothing but a diaper. I would rather have seen a dog, honestly.

yes, i agree with that..babies and small children are by far the nastiest little creatures ever when they want to be. except for the parents who do things like change them in the middle of a restaurant, for example.

No shoes, no shirt, no service. The manager should have asked them to leave or at least control their child. I am pretty sure you are not allowed to let your half-naked child run around the store.

Their is always Exceptions to every rule.

I worked at Petcetra in Canada, We welcome people to bring their pets in.
We had a doggie day care, Grooming Facilities, and we adopted out animals from the SPCA, Which we had to take out for potty breaks.

My pet peeve tho" was when the owner would bring their pet in with them and It would have a potty accident. Most times they would just walk away from it and do nothing! WHAT'S WITH THAT?!

When the animal is a service pet. They are normally well behaved and taken extremely good care of Hygienically. I'll not deny anyone anything with one.
I'd assume though, that if it is a service animal that Said Person would not have an issue with a question about it.

I had a friend that trained his GS to wait outside the Bar for him when he drank. lol As a child I remember walking our dog and NEVER was I allowed to bring it a store. It's just proper manners. Which society today is severely lack in.

It's the entitlement thing. "I'm special, so I get to break the rules and cuss at you if you tell me I'm mistaken."

Update! My mom just went to the grocery store in question. She said that they were putting up large signs that state only service dogs are allowed in the store. She quietly asked a store clerk about it. They all were given notices on policies and procedures in regard to pets in the store.

The thing that gets me is that these people never think of the effect their "pet" dog can have on actual Service Dogs.

Having your pet pooch in stores that don't allow pets can distract a real Service Dog from it's job, which then can very well endanger the life of it's disabled partner.

Now, Service Dogs are well trained to deal with distraction obviously but when your dog jumps out of your cart and hurls itself at my Service Dog, attacking him and barking and snarling while my Service Dog tries to keep walking at a heel and while I (the disabled handler) have to stop and physically use my body to protect my highly trained dog who is techincally a piece of medical equipment worth about $25,000, THAT my friend is NOT COOL!

I don't know about everywhere but here in RI it's AGAINST THE LAW to interfere with a working dog and if someone or their pet dog injure your SD, they're looking at a lawsuit, and a big one at that if they had that pet in a non-pet place.

Oh this is such a pet peeve of mine!

My youngest DD is afraid of dogs. She had a litter of 7 lab puppies (a couple months old, so not tiny) knock her face-first into the gravel driveway and "say hello" to her when she was about 18 months. Poor guys, they were just licking her up & down and jumping all over her - doing what puppies do. But it scared the dickens out of her because she was trapped, face down on the ground!

When she was 4 she had some little yappy dog bite her (there was a female dog in the area and he was all worked up - DD was close by the female and he took it out on her) requiring stitches.

When we encounter a dog in public it's always a bit of a stressful thing for DD, and I do my best to help her through it, but she has a valid fear.

Having said all that, I have a lab that we rescued. I take her with me in the car a few places (the grain elevator to get chicken food, the pet store, the driveup at the bank where she gets a treat

) but not into non-pet stores. When we are out I am super careful not to let her get close to people - I assume that everyone we meet is afraid of dogs, or doesn't like dogs, and I keep my dog at a distance. If someone wants to meet her, they have to approach us -- I'm not going to bring her up to them first.
