We thought we heard a crow the other morning. There are 2 suspects. Here they are:

#1 is my rescue chicken - was found wandering the streets at the tender age of 4-6 weeks old.
S/he is very inquisitive and fearless, friendly and affectionate. Loves to hang with his peeps (humans). Doesn't back down when the labs come sniffing their crate.

Here's the Brown Leghorn we just got from a feedstore to be the BFF of the rescue chicken.
She's shy and quiet and we find her nesting on the floor sometimes. She's not a peep lover yet but today she fell asleep as I was petting her. So gentle and timid.

The morning after we introduced the leghorn we heard what sounded like a crow. Very odd!

do you need better pics?
We didn't hear a crow today. I'm still hoping they're both pullets!

Hmmm... This one has me stumped... Neither one yells "rooster" to me. Are you sure there aren't any other possible suspects? The Brown Leghorn looks like a pullet. Have you any ideas on the breed? It looks a bit RIR-ish. But I don't see anything that really points roo on either one.

ETA - sorry, I missed the part you said they're in a crate.

#1 is your culprit. You can't hardly sex these two by comb yet, but the coloring on #2 is a give away. #2 has the female sex-link pattern of her breed. Since there is no doubt that #2 is the pullet, that leaves you with #1 as the crower. Hope I helped!

. Sometimes, a female may crow if there is no roo to do it. Neither of them have big enough combs to be roos.

Ok! There are no other chickens in the crate.

#1 is a RIR or mix (I'm pretty sure - not the top quality kind, but a nice personality nonetheless and perfect for my backyard admiration)

I do have a flock nearby - 2-3 year old hens, well established group of 7. The Wyandottes are the loud ladies of the others. But they don't crow - they cackle/cowl (I'm listening to them as I type).

I agree with the waddles/comb color! And I've been examining those feathers to see if there are any that could be long and I can't find any.
But the personality is very Alpha, she's larger than the other. The fearless thing is baffling - but we've had hens like that too (usually later once they start laying though)

I'd guess her age to be 12-14 weeks. She has gotten huge in the last few weeks.
When I brought the brown leghorn to her she was HUGE in comparison - they are supposed to be the same age.

#2 is a pullet - no question. Thats the BBR (black breasted red) hen color - all BBR type coloring - the girls color out this way ( BBR english bantams, the brown leghorns, the BBR pheonixes etc ) So that means if you heard crowing its got to be # 1

does the #1 bird have a single comb or not? can't tell by the pics, but it doesn't look like a single comb to me - either a mixed comb or a peacomb. - since you don't know the actual breed or mixes - theres no telling whats in teh mix...I swear looking at the chicken I was thinking buckeye - not RIR...even by that age I would expect a RIR hen to have more comb.
