How's the headache

and the chickluck today?

I agree. The person who starved him wouldn't have cared that much, but the frustrated witness may have stolen him and brought him to the one person they knew kept chickens and would give him a chance.

I just found this thread (and haven't read ALL the posts), but the pictures and description are very similar to a situation I'm going through with a sick hen. For whatever reason, she is severely malnourished and I've been trying like heck for a week to put some weight back on her! She continued to act relatively normally (no noticeable lack of energy), so we never realized she was sick until her comb got limp and fell over to the side. Then, we found out how awfully thin she had gotten! Her breastbone is sticking way out and her face is all sunken in.

I've been force feeding her Exact Hand Feeding Formula and giving her Nutri-drench for the past week now, but she's still so incredibly thin... I don't know what else to do. I honestly can't believe that she still walks around and acts mostly normal, except she barely eats anything on her own. She drinks okay, and she sometimes pecks at or shovels her crumbles with her beak; but her crop doesn't really get filled near enough unless I make it happen with the parrot paste and a syringe. Have you had any luck fattening up Lucky? If so, can you please tell me what I should add to Pearl's diet to help her gain weight? (All 6 of our other chickens are in excellent health, btw, so I can't figure this out at all!)

I don't recall ever seeing a chicken rulebook that says you MUST butcher and eat your meat birds! I think he was meant for you...run with it!

I think it's a hen too.

But only time will tell for sure.

Amazing story. Our Cookie, polish crested roo learned how to go up the stairs to our bedroom loft with a broken wing mind you, last night. I put him back downstairs to sleep. Then this morning he was again upstairs and came over to my side of the bed, on the floor and proceeded to go to sleep.

They sure sneak into your heart for sure!

JestersEye--Has it been extra hot there lately? It's been hot here and one of my hens got listless & wasn't much interested in eating. I put some vitamins, mineral & electrolytes in water & gave to her by syringe. And I found something she is interested in eating--bugs! I've taken her out of the coop at night & brought her to the outside of the house where the porch light spotlights all the juicy night critters. She is very cooperative about eating them even if I'm still holding her & just lean her close to the bug. We call this game "Point-&-Cluck".

It has probably saved her life, as she was getting thin and weak.
If it's hot, pouring some cool water in a shallow hole in the shade where the chickens can wallow in the dirt is helpful for them to cool off in.

It's definately been hot on some occasions, but we've also had plenty of rain, too. This hen is one of our Blue Andalusians, which is a mediterrean breed... If any of our girls were going to have a tough time due to the heat, you'd think it would be one of the fluffy Orpingtons! Anyway, I have gone out and made some puddles for them to splash in since I found her. For the last week, though, she's been inside the air-conditioned house getting some TLC. She was panting for most of that time, but she's finally stopped for the most part, which is the only real improvement I've noticed. My biggest concern at this point is how to get her to gain weight. I've never even imagined a chicken could get so skinny as this.

Well, I'm sure it's going to be a little while before I see a noticeable difference in his size, he had almost absolutely no meat on him when he was dropped off, though I have noticed he's starting to get some meat on his legs and wings finally, but he's still all keel bone. But at least he's walking and attempting to make noise finally, though it's still real faint and squeaky. I've been feeding him an egg a day along with his crumbles and I've been giving him yogurt every other day. Though he's a better 'beggar' than even my pug. Hubby and I were eating dinner and he came up to me and gave me the look, so I gave him a piece of my sloppy joe and he was happy lol I really hope you're able to get your little girl back to full health. You might want to cook her an egg for some extra protein and maybe find her some crickets if she seems to still have interest in bugs.
