Someone dropped off a starved almost dead cockeral *update

Thanks for sharing your story. Sad but a good ending. I love those kind!

Heck, I had my handicapped pheasant sleep with me during our power outage and ice storm, and I wasn't even tipsy! I am betting a pullet. My California White has a good sized comb that flops a little (yours is probably floppy because of dehydration) and also little spurs. It really looks like a hen to me.

I was thinking the same thing...Leghorn pullets have floppy combs like that, and the roos combs are huge and stand straight up. It's hard to tell with the body shape because it's sickly looking...but I don't see any real roo characteristics yet.

I tried to reply yesterday with this info but my power went out as some storms blew through and I lost my reply...then I was too lazy to re-type it...

i love a story with a happy ending.. and no you aren't the only one with "things" in your bed.. i have had .. chipmunks. ferrets, cats, dog, baby parrots ... nice to know i am not the only animal lover.. gl with your new baby

Absolutely no excuse for that kind of cheek. Well.....I hope that by the time you get him recooperated and he is grown and identified with his proper breed, that he is the perfect standard of perfection and can be judged and awarded in a local fair, because I think it would be awesome if he is on the newspaper with his story, from beginning to end and the culprit finds out he hand delivered something valueable. I have to agree....how can you starve a chicken??? You almost have to want to, or not even be trying to care for your animals.....like you forgot you had them. It probably took more effort to abandon him than it would have to just feed him.

From the way the person put the chicken up on the porch and then drove off quickly, I'm thinking that the person in the truck wasn't the schmuck who mistreated the chicken. I'm thinking it's more likely to be a case like my dog. Someone (who shall remain nameless) rescued the parents and litter she came from. The original owner used a baseball bat on wife and dogs. The wife ended up in ICU, the female could only walk to her food and water and then back to the pups, and the male had been beaten so often and so long just about every bone in his body had been broken at one point or another. He couldn't even walk at all because he currently had a broken pelvis and 3 broken ribs!
The kind soul who rescued the dogs knew that the county had no animal shelter or people who could take on dogs needing thousands of dollars worth of medical care and a litter of puppies (even imported registered BCs), so all would end up being put down.
The rescuer knew he'd get in trouble for taking the dogs so he took them all to a friend he knew who had BCs and treated them well. I got my pup from that friend. I'm thinking the person who rescued your pet did something of the kind and/or couldn't keep the bird so they got it to someone they thought would take care of the bird.
One way or the other, I'm so glad he/she got to the right person!!!
You're great to take in the poor chicken.
