Someone rescued a slaughterhouse silkie! Now what?

I got this call yesterday from the parent coordinator at my kids' school. She said the secretary's daughter (19 years) had rescued a chicken from a slaughterhouse here in Brooklyn. She brought it to the school, hoping her mom would help her find a home for it.

I'm the "chicken lady" in our neighborhood, so of course they called me. When she said it was a white chicken, my first thought was that it was a CornishX, and I thought, no way. But then she starting saying it was a fluffy and white and little and -- sure enough. It was a silkie. We have five bantams, so I thought she would fit in nicely with our flock.

So we brought her home, and we have her set up in a cage adjoining our coop.

My question is --- how long before we integrate them? Do I need to quarantine her? I am guessing she is around 3 months old, because isn't that around when they slaughter them?

Our hens are about a year old, and look big compared to her! (four brahmas, and one EE).

This part is sad: she doesn't seem to know about scratching. She's pecking at feed, and occasionaly picking up a leaf, but doesn't know what to do other than that.

Also, does anyone speak Japanese? One of my kids wants to name her Lucky, the other kid wants to name her Cloud. They are compromising, and have settled on Lucky Cloud, in Japanese. We just have to find out how to say it.

Interesting that a silkie is found in a slaughterhouse. Maybe it was a specialty Chinese one, as I seem to remember they eat them. She is a pretty bird. I don't know any Japanese, but I hope you find someone who does.

What a pretty bird.. Lucky to find you.. Are you sure it is female. It may have been at the slaughter house for a reason.. Meaning most people butcher males.. Just an idea... I have no idea how to sex a silkie...

You should keep it seperated from your flock for at least 30 days I believe. It should be farther away from your flock than what you have it.. It could pass a disease.. Better safe then sorry..

Thanks everyone.

Sunny, I will move her further away. Thanks for the tip.

Happy hens, thanks for the translation!

Silkie chickens for food have been getting more popular in NYC, especially in Chinatown -- they are good for a certain type of medicinal soup. They just started selling them at the food coop I belong to. Small, black-skinned birds.

The girl who rescued her said she was a hen, and I believed her, now I'm not sure why! Well, I hope she is, because we can't keep roosters in the city...

Thanks everyone, 30 days-quarantine it is.

I think she is a non-bearded hen. She is much older than 3 months. I would quarantine her for at least 21 days. She looks old enough to be laying, but the switch in environments will probably cause her to quite laying for a few weeks.
