someone stole my chocolate hen... X(

Sorry for your loss....

I would also post a "STOLEN" listing in your local Craigslist's Farm & Garden section....

If you had a another bigger, fatter, slower turkey available,
they may not have been after her to eat her, IMO.....

Yeah, people can really be unbelievable, grrrrr.
Let us know if any thing else happens, we care.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

I'd like to point out that it didn't have to be the agent or house buyers. You can hear poultry out in the country for miles. Nobody has to see your birds to know that you've got poultry.

If someone came specifically for the chocolate hen and left the fat slow turkey, then I bet it is someone you know. The majority of the population can't tell one turkey from another, so it was someone who knew you had a chocolate hen and knew she was rare. The odds of having someone who has enough money to buy a farm and also knows enough about poultry to want a chocolate hen, yet not enough cash to purchase the turkey they want are just about nil.

No, whoever took the bird did not do it because they were hungry. They did it because they are a dirty, stinking, immoral thief. If they were hungry, they'd go to the food bank, not break and enter to steal. Don't make excuses for them. The only thing they are is dishonest.

yes, true, we don't know who did it.

however one of the two agents, and the one prospective buyer who saw the place both mentioned having turkeys of their own. And I do know the neighbors on 3 sides and the guy who runs his cows on the fourth, none have turkeys or seem to know anything about them... if it was any of them, I've lost any hope of ever trusting anyone again - these are kind, honest, helpful people, and as best I can judge, the seriously stand-up sort. and my landlord lives in town and is a masively city boy. so I'm pretty sure it wasn't him. aside from the RE folks, there hasn't been anyone else on the property in months, and no-one else who's ever mentioned knowing or having turkeys.

of course I can't prove it wasn't any of them any more than I can prove it was anyone else. can't prove that the turkeys never roam down to the fenceline, but I've never seen them do it. and one could easily get on the property if you didn't mind a little barbwire fence, to shop in advance (but then, why cut the lock?). we're pretty large properties out here, mostly 40 acres and up, but I suppose on a good day the gobbler's voice could carry. still you'd think if they took just the chocolate, they had to be looking for it. if they were just looking for turkeys, based on the sound, why not take any of the others? I've got an equally nice RP hen... I guess if I heard turkey sounds, I wouldn't be assuming they're chocolates, given how unlikely that is. so I'm inclined to thing it's someone who's seen her,

but there doesn't seem to be much to do about proving anything. X(

going with this theory, regardless: "dirty, stinking, immoral thief".

had the same thing happen to me one time. Its most liky someone that came over and bought birds from you. They might have tried to get you to sell that bturkey to them a t one time but you said no.
Had that happen to me a bunch of people came over seen my snowy call ducks asked if they could buy them told them no many times well week later all four went missing.

we've never sold any (or tried to) because we're just getting started... but it's a problem I've thought about when we are ready to.
