pearl is a perfect name! u made me feel alot better now reading this. i thought i only had a week or two left with my boy... but if he can live a bit, ill let him.. thank you so much everyone

I'm not sure how old they are (1yr+) but a chicken lady near me has 2-3 of the white ones & they are still alive. For some reason all her girls died off, but she's managed to keep her boys kicking atleast for longer than ususal, that's for sure. And they are HUGE!

I'm sorry........... I just found out I have a meat chicken too that was supposed to be a buff orp. rooster. Now I am not sure what I am going to do. I plan on getting meat chicks but that was down the road I wanted to make sure the layers got plenty of attention. He is only 2 weeks so I guess I have time to decide.......

So he is 11 weeks old. How much does he weigh? If he is under 6-7 lbs... he's not a broiler! A cornish x broiler at 11 weeks old would easily be 10-14 lbs. Assuming a "bad/slow" red broiler, I would say it is safe to assume, that if he is not half the weight of a white meat bird, he wasn't meant for meat in the first place and he's just a lucky heavy breed boy.

I've been getting depressed too, reading posts about broilers and about my Cornish X.

I'm rationing food and letting her free range often so I am hoping that she will live a good happy life with us.

A friend of mine got a Cornish X from the same hatchery and she ended up living for 2 years.

Let's hope our chickens are around and happy for awhile, shall we?

the guy is not rude.
he simply assumes that you are like him, and that if you are going to spend the money to keep something alive (that is designed to be eaten) that you will at least benefit from it's measly existence.
he was trying to save you the trouble of falling in love with this rooster.
whatever he is, good luck to you and him both.

measly existence? and in 11 weeks ive already fallen in love with this guy. i fell in love with him the day i got him. .. i wouldnt want someone to come to my house and tell me my dog cheyanne is fat, and so i need to kill her... this guy is a pet to me, i just wish the dude wouldnt have mentioned anything, because now i am dreading every day going out there and finding him suffering or dead. i guess ill think of him as my rescued chicken. the chicken that just gets to live as long as he can happy on free range with a bunch of his friends.. oh, and he is starting to.. mate.. i think... lol. he grabs the other chickens neck feathers and tries to mount.. of course hes too fat to do anything. and probably too young too! lol

augiedranch...I understand how you feel. When someone told me my Chick-Chick would be gone in a few weeks, I about hit the ceiling b/c she is my pet, OUR household pet, we all love her more than we thought we could. Even my oldest son has gotten used to having her around (even though he makes jokes about taking her to Costco for roasting...augh).

Don't let experienced meat chicken (or any chicken person really) or any other person get to you. It is a FACT whether we like it or not that meat chickens are bred for and with a purpose. It's a FACT that people into meat chickens have that something different in their thinking than those of us who aren't or look at them more as pets. It is also FACT that WE can take good care of them and extend their lives to longer than a few weeks. It is also a fact that we can make their lives GOOD ones.

I too think about the next time I look at her outside or here in the house when we bring her in if she'll be alive or not. It's hard not to. But try instead to enjoy your roo and what he brings to your life. Easier said than done however maybe knowing there are others like me who are going through what you are may help.

i guess we'll prove them wrong. and let these big cuties enjoy a fun and happy life with us as long as they are here. even though he is a meat breed, some people around my house think im silly,, but he is a pet to me, he isnt a chicken stew.

and he weighs about five pounds... ..... i dont know if thats good or bad...

thanks again
