Someone took my threats seriously. UPDATE - The Perfect Egg

No I thought brown ones were rooster eggs, so brown ones are fresh so they get lighter as they become unfresh?? So all the white eggs from the store are unfresh, I think I need help!!

What color of egg will my rooster give wont it be brown and fertile?? or are only the hen eggs fertile when they are brown???

Huuhhhhh????

Last time I checked, Roosters don't lay eggs of any color. Certain breed hens lay certain color eggs. My black sex link hens (that laid these 2 eggs) lay brown eggs, my EEs should lay blue/green/tan/pink eggs. Some breeds only lay white eggs.

These store-bought brown eggs are from a carton that says "free roaming - cage free - organically fed HENS".

I did enjoy the laugh though - not laughing at you Mdbucks - strictly laughing with you. Reminded me of the time my daughter and her friend from across the street were going to make cookies for our new neighbors and they came over asking for eggs. I said "what, Ashliegh's mom, the chef, didn't have any eggs?" My daughter said "yeah she did but the recipe called for white eggs and she only had brown ones. We need some white eggs". I laughed and said "honey the recipe calls for egg whites not white eggs".

mdbucks, the color of the egg has nothing to do with how fresh the eggs are. Some chickens are brown egg layers, and some are white egg layers. There are even some that lay different colored eggs. But, the color has nothing at all to do with freshenss.

What I think CtlisencedArborist meant was that the more eggs a brown egg laying chicken lays, the lighter the brown becomes!!

Finally, Roosters DON'T lay!! If you find one that does, let me know...... we'll both get rich!!!

I'm looking forward to checking the coop in the morning. Didn't know something so simple could be so fun and exciting. I put golf balls in the nest boxes today hoping they will us them. It looks like they just dropped these eggs right from the roost since they were directly under the roost and in line with all the poop. Also looks like same hen may have laid both since they were right next to each other and it is a huge coop. I guess I could always put hay on the wire bottom of the coop just in case they are dropping them from roost but I don't want to encourage them to lay in middle of coop instead of nice nest boxes we built. I've never been so excited waiting on morning to come since I was a kid waiting on Christmas and I am NOT a morning person so that says it all.

A lady came to the store today to buy eggs. She must have gone through a dozen cartons checking them. I asked her if she needed any help, and she was looking for a carton with only brown eggs. (Our egg lady must have gotten some EE's or something because she's putting in a few blues and greens here and there.)

I had to switch some eggs out for her so she could get a dozen brown eggs, no blue or green.

Funny how it matters to people. I thought the blue and green ones were cool.

No egg yesterday, Saturday, that I know of, but they do free range so I could have missed it. But today when we were letting them out for the morning, my egg layer was still in the coop. She came out to eat but was clucking and squawking so I knew she still needed to lay. It was like watching the nature channel. I had my husband bring us some cups of coffee and put the chairs right in front of coop with one side up so I could watch. She got back in coop and this time in a nest box. YEA!!!

She must have stayed there 20 minutes and moved hay with her beak every once in a while but other than that, no actual sign of when she layed it. Our cat Morris even got in coop and got in nest box beside her and it did not disturb her even with me yelling at the cat. Finally I thought, wait a minute I'm missing a Kodak moment here and started to take a picture of cat and hen in nest box but just then Morris got out. Only caputured the top of his head.

Another hen came and stared at the laying hen for about 5 minutes and finally the hen in box came out.

Here's what she left:

It was the PERFECT EGG. Large with hard brown speckled shell. I guess her two little rubber eggs Friday were just a warm up for the real thing.

I felt a little guilty grabbing it and running in and frying it up for husband and I but I swear it was the best egg either of us had ever had and we buy the free roaming, cage free, organic eggs. I even licked the plate. The yolk was so good.

Well folks, that's my Perfect Egg story. Not sure if the excitement will go downhill after this. There are three other BSL that should be laying any day - 4 EE's a month behind - and then 4 Buff Orps about 4 months behind that.

I wonder if it will actually get boring and tedious to have to go out and gather the eggs when everyone has been laying for awhile. Anyway, it is really eggggciitting now.
