Something attacted my flock

My OWN dog killed one of my buff Orpingtons yesterday. By the time I saw him, he had a second one in his mouth, shaking it. I ran out and he let her go and jumped back out of the run. It took me a few minutes to realize one was missing. I found her dead next to the side of our shed. When my husband came out to discipline him, he turned on him and bit him. Needless to say, the dog immediately went to the shelter and my husband to the ER, since there was one puncture that was pretty deep, on the inside of his wrist, bleeding pretty bad. We've had Charlie since he was 10 weeks old, now 1 1/2 years old. I'm so saddened by the whole event and since he bit a person, he will most likely be put down. I was always told that once they get a taste of blood, they won't stop. Has anyone else has this experience? I also have 4 and 11 year old boys and while he's always been good with them, it made me crazy nervous to allow him around them after this. Thoughts?

Bad information here.

I set a trap today. It all started about a week ago. A friend gave me 6 young chickens. They were last the stage of needing a box with t h a light. I introduced them to my 3 adult chickens and 4 ducks. All was well. One night something got a young chicken leaving a clump of feathers and skin. Last night, it was back. Whatever got my 5 young chickens left the gizzards. It was very strange. Messy. What could have done this??

So sorry for your loss, and it could have been any of the above critters mentioned. Have your survivors on lockdown until this is resolved! Electrified poultry netting will be very helpful here, and you could get lucky with a live trap. We had a mangy sick fox kill ten of our hens one spring afternoon, seen by a neighboring workman, who did nothing. Our fox returned for bodies, again during the day, and one of our neighbors was able to take him out a few days later, again, during the day, near their chicken coop. I visited everyone I knew in my area who had birds, so we were all on the alert. Good luck! Mary
