My ~17 month Golden laced Wyandotte took a quick downhill turn today - was fine this afternoon then this evening wasn't roosting, and was extremely lethargic (she usually wakes up and jumps down when I go to put them up at night). She wouldn't walk, and kept falling asleep. She appeared to have runny yellow feces around a swollen vent, so I thought it could be vent gleet. I gave her a 20 min epson salt bath, and then after was going to further inspect her vent and noticed there was actually something coming OUT of her vent. It looks like an anatomical thing, but doesn't look like a prolapse, or anything I could imagine popping out from that area! HELP! Anyone know what this is? Push it back in, or pull it out??

I'd pull it out - see if there's anymore, so if there's any kind of thing connected that's still in there, gently manipulate it to see if you can get it all in one glob, then examine it. It's possible it's a lash egg (do a search on them) - if you cut this lovely thing in half and it's a lash egg it will look like rotten egg lasagna. Otherwise she may have had an egg break internally and now be suffering from an infection as a result. How long since she laid her last normal egg?

Thanks - I'll look into that!

The more I read about prolapses it doesn't look or seem like that, and seems more and more likely an egg thing. I was just concerned about pulling out an organ or something, but it doesn't seem like there's anything there in chicken anatomy that looks like that, right?

Not sure when she laid her last egg...we have seven chickens and it's difficult to keep track.

Definitely not a prolapse at this point. If she starts straining trying to get the rest of the egg material (whatever the root cause) -- she might prolapse- so I would keep her separate from her friends. If they see a prolapsed vent, they will peck it- and THAT can lead to them pulling her intestines out- no joke. So- I would keep her in her own little chicken cottage (box, crate, whatever) for now.

You can gently poke around inside her vent with your finger and see if you feel any shell or other material that needs to come out. Warning, this can lead to spontaneous pooping- I've had them projectile poop and because they pushed so hard, the rest of whatever was left of the egg came pouring out too.

If she does prolapse - cool water to rinse whatever debris- then use your finger to swab some original preparation H (no pain relief) or hydrocortisone cream around her vent- that will take down tissue inflammation that happens when they strain.

It becomes a vicious circle - strain to evacuate material, tissue swells, strain harder, swells more, prolapse. The ointments will take the inflammation away (only do this if she starts straining and prolapses) and help her not feel like she has to strain.
