Out of 6 ducklings I had one that had horrible legs. He was a silver appleyard so a bigger breed, but his 3 siblings were from the same batch and had no problems. Ironically he was also the “runt” of my group. I supplemented all of them with niacin daily, and it seemed to help but took some time. I fed it to effect rather than calculating an exact dosage since i didn’t know how much they were actually consuming. (I put crushed tablets over their feed). I also made sure he had a lot of swimming time (supervised of course) to exercise those legs without too much strain on them. The one hatchmate I kept still has a slightly pigeon-toed stance but some of those heavyweights seem to just be that way. She can stand straight, has no issues walking or anything, just has a slight turn to both feet that’s sometimes more obvious than others. The Swedish duck I have does not, although her legs are slightly bowed. She never had any issues as a baby. Then the newest ducky addition I have is a runner that I hatched, and she has the straightest duck legs I’ve ever seen. I had all of them on a 19% duck and goose starter and cut it with oats at the 3 week mark as outlined in the Storey’s duck book.
all my WH ducklings had weird feet. they grew out of it. but keep on with niacin as it also helps bone growth. I gave it to mine from day 2. Not sure how the one my duckies have just hatched looks yet, as they won't let me near! lol
Hi thank you for your responses everyone!! I appreciate it!!@Miss Lydia your questions are all answered in my previous posts.
I looked at pictures and in many of the pictures the females feet pointed more inwards and the males had a wider stance. I'm thinking this may be just the breed...?
Thanks again,
Kelly
