Head twitching, laying down acts lame hasn't laid in the past two weeks. Was number 1 hen with her sister Alice both black austrlops 1.5yr slept fine last night. Was fine all today. Went in the pen before I went to leave and noticed her like this. I took her out is breathing fine no coughing or sneezing. Im in Maine and it did down poor the last two days here.

Have you parted her feathers on neck, back, under wing, above and below tail to check really carefully for the presence of mites?

The lethargy combined with head shaking may be due to mites sucking her blood, leaving her tired and weak, and the shaking head may be at the irritation of having tiny parasites crawling by the sensitive skin of her face.

Please let us know.

Ok thank you I will check her out when I get home i had to leave before I found her in super worried.

I just inherited a Flock of chickens and all have mites.... They act a lot like your describing.... Head shaking, stop laying, lameness.... Also check her legs for mites, as you say she is acting lameness....

Hope she recovers.

Thank you I hope yours do as well what are remedies I can do in the mean time?

The same old Diatomaceous Earth will knock out mites if your flock will just dirt bathe in earth with a liberal amount of DE tossed on the surface or mixed in. With my current adults, despite the fact that they've got a big old run to muck about in, they prefer to climb up into large pots I have filled with soil and do their dirt bathing in there.

So if its soggy and raining and bleh outside, see if you can obtain a concrete mixing tub
(Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Walmart and many other chain stores carry them - just call ahead to make sure). That way you can place nice earth mixed with DE in it for them to bathe in, and place that inside their sheltered area of the coop. You don't want it getting rained in.
