Something killed my entire flock, didn't even leave a single chick

sounds like a dog to me too. They kill for the fun of it. Have you checked to see any tracks in your pen?? Do you have an inubator? I copuld send you some Polish eggs...

Come on guys, This teen is asking for sympathy and support, not a fight.

So sorry angelfire, It's rough to lose 1 let alone the whole flock. Wish I could do something.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I am in the process of building my run and this kind of post is why it is taking so long. Trying to predator proof as much as possible.

You say whatever it was dug underneath the Hardware cloth - did you have an apron coming out along the ground on the outside of the run or did the cloth just go straight down to the ground? I am just asking because if it dug under a apron then I need to go back to the drawing board.

Again, so sorry you lost your chickens.

Thank you guys so much for the support and to the few users who offered some hatching eggs to replace my flock. I will gladly accept these, because if I denied someone who would be willing to do something like that, I feel it would be incredibly rude of me. I do indeed have an incubator, which I used to use to hatch out my roosters' chicks. The hens I had never seemed to go broody, but glady accepted the Marans chicks when we had them, who were also hatched in that incubator

And although I did not post this asking for a fight about who did kill my flock, it was interesting to hear what everyone had to say. There are some faint scratch marks in the dirt, but no paw prints clear enough to scream 'dog'. I will be rebuilding the coop, putting extra care into the fencing this time.

If any of you wish to say something to me which you would rather not post on the forums, feel free to PM me. I am always opening to listening.

Again, thank you all,

Angelfire

Angelfire, I have the utmost empathy for you...my entire flock of 30 birds were killed late on 4/30/10 and it was the same as you described - bodies everywhere as well as blood. Just last night after I thought I had secured a coop/run for my 4 EE's, I go out to lock the coop door and find only 2 of the 4 in the run! I then see a space below the front open. I look around and catch the neighbor's dog on top of my georgeous roo, Dorian!! I never did find the other hen, Sophia, but Dorian was about 100' from the coop, attempting to bring the dog(s?) away from the others. I am so sick of this!! I obviously have not yet comprehended the meaning of predator proof and will probably hire someone to do the job for me!

I feel your pain, but continue learning about and caring for birds/chicks. I eventually will learn the correct way to protect them but it breaks my heart to suffer them being killed due to my ignorance/negligence!!

maybe you could talk to your neighbor, I would know if my dog came home with blood on them, if it was as bloody as you said, but explain to them that you did leave the coop open, I would want to know if my dog killed chickens. Without blaming them, maybe you could at least find out for sure. that is very sad that it happened.
