All you can do is follow the evidence. Also look for tracks in the coop, at the original site and all along the route. If no tracks, could be aerial... If dog like tracks you're looking for a fox or a coyote, maybe even a wolf. If it looks like a human hand, then you're looking for a coon.

Also look for poop along the trail. That can also help you identify the critter.
 
Sounds like a coon, go stand under the tree where you found the feather and shine a bright light all around it, look for two bright lights shinning back. Then make plans to get rid of it and it's pals. Good luck and so sorry for your loss.
 
Couldnt a hawk leave that kind of evidence. Remember the quail in the wild have been decimated in most areas to what they were 20 years ago. Since they did the predatory bird protection thing in the 80's. We have hundreds of redtail hawks that winter in our area now. And the pheasant and quail that used to fill our fields no longer can be found.
