Hey everyone,

I recently bought some RIR chickens. They are about 3-4 weeks old. This one has something wrong with her foot. She is able to get around but once she gets there she will sit down. I can bend all her toes and she doesn't seem to be hurting. They have been going outside during the day since it's warm. I don't think she has stepped on anything. The other chicks don't pick on her. Just not sure what happened to her. Has anyone ever seen this before. Will she be alright???? What can I do to fix her?

Thanks for your help!!!!

I recently had a Del chick born w/ both feet useless. While I could bend them and stretch them out the poor thing had no control over them. It scooted around just fine. Even hatched w/ no problem. I waited a couple of days to see if it improved but it didn't so I had to cull it. I don't know how if a hen she would lay and egg and if a roo how he would mate. Not to mention get in and out of the coop. It certainly wouldn't have been able to roost.
You bird may have the same problem. If a hen how is she going to get in and out of the nest box, or away from a predator for that matter.

hello all, i am a new member and what a great site!

i bought several pullets today and one has the same foot issue... i cannot seem to find anything online as to what causes it, or how to treat it. I am very interested in reading any posts related.

My Salmon Faverolle rooster has a foot that looks exactly like your RIR's foot. My roo's foot was like that from day one as a chick. I've read that in Faverolles, it's in their genes somewhere. As far as your RIR is concerned, I'm sure it was gene issue also, but nothing to worry about. My roo walks fine, roosts normally and guards his two hens faithfully. As long as your hen is eating, drinking and acting like a chicken should (maybe a little slower) you have nothing to worry about.

I just had a batch hatch thats doing the samething. They move around ok . I hate to cull them .they have so much will power to live .they move around ok . if anyone figure out .what is causing this ,or how to treat them. please post

Vitamin B complex helps as well as nutra drench. Nutra drench can be purchased at a feed store or TSC. Just follow the directions on the bottle,it has alot of vitamins and minerals needed for chicks and full grown chickens as well. It doesnt have vitamin B complex in it. I bought a bottle of it at CVS pharmacy, the standard white elongated kind and crushed it and added it to the chicks feed. I had one chick that was squatting all the time and determined it was a vitamin deficiency and after a couple of weeks she was walking normally. Careful with nutra drench though, after awhile it'll cause diarrhea.

We are going to a bigger city on Saturday that has a TSC and I will stop in there and get some Nutra Drench. Thanks for your help. I will let you know if it works.
