Hi.

I posted about my 11mo RIR pullet having some egg issues. I discovered red poultry mites in the coop- spray is coming tomorrow. They don't seem to be affecting my other girls (2 CQs) but Dionne (the RIR) is not well at all. I noticed a large bug on her comb sucking blood. Unfortunately, it flew away before I could see what it was. She didn't even react to me touching the blood spots on her comb. She's lost weight, egg quality is poor- she laid an egg today that was so thin shelled it collapsed, very pale comb/wattles/face, not vocalizing, yellow urates in poop, and horribly smelly poop (not cecal). Here's some pictures. They get fed Nature's Best Organic Layer Pellets, occasional kitchen scraps, eggshells, and whatever they find while free ranging. Please tell me how I can help this girl. I'm sick to my stomach right now with the thought of losing another sweet pullet.

Her comb looks darker in these pics- it's actually a bubblegum/sepia color. The large scab underneath is from a fight with another CQ.

Also- she keeps going back behind the AC fan in the back yard and just standing there, listlessly. I'm really worried about her.

The mites are probably draining her blood. You should dust her with permethrin dust or use soluble solution and wipe her down. You can give her some spinach or kale to help her rebuild her blood cells.

Another also- her sister died 3 months ago of FLHS. Dionne is now showing some of the same signs. They're not sedentary at all and get fed a balanced diet. I'm now starting to consider a genetic history of liver disease. They were ordered as day-old chicks from My Pet Chicken.

Offer oyster shell free choice as well.

I agree, take care of the mite problem and see if that makes a difference.
Personally I would not give spinach to a hen that is having difficulty with soft shelled eggs. I would increase her calcium. While in moderation spinach makes a great treat, it also contains phytic acid and oxalic acid which can bind with calcium and inhibit it's absorption. I'm not sure how much spinach it would take to really cause any ill effects, but in this particular circumstance I would use a bit of caution. IF she were not having shell issues, then as a treat it would be mighty tasty!

You can give Poultry Cell to help build her up or give her about 1tablespoon of beef liver a couple of times a week.
