Lillith, my two year old buff brahma hen. It's been more than a year ago that she swallowed some broken glass. Every since then she goes through periods where she eats well, lays well and is the picture of health. Other times, she gets real thin and quits laying.
Sometimes I wonder if she's suffering and that I should cull her. DH says that as long as she's running around with the others, eating some and isn't in obvious pain I should leave her be.
I just don't know.

I agree with your husband.

I never understood this until I went through it, but everyone that said it was so right. When it's time to end their suffering, you'll know without a doubt. I never realized how true it was until I had to put my 1st dog down.

You WILL know when it's time. Until then, I'd leave her be.

I agree, you will know if it is time to cull. It's something that you just KNOW when the time comes. My last dog, she was very ill, but I sensed that she wasn't ready to go, so I waited. One morning, she let me know. I can't tell you how I knew or what it was, but it was time.

I agree. I haven't had to face this (yet) with my chickens, but I have had to with three cats. There was no doubt in my mind when the time was. If your hen is still running around with the others, and eating some. . . well, I think that speaks for itself.
