They happened to see each other at a gathering, and their parents hated each other
She was about to be forcibly married off to (I thought it was her cousin, but I could be wrong.)

The entire story takes place over about 3 days.
And at least 3 people die.

I don't know if it was "supposed to be romantic" hundreds of years ago. Different times, maybe they couldn't have eloped back then (I'm sure they would have rather been rich royals, or die, rather than elope and be commoners)

Oh, I had to read it in 9th grade, I do remember the plot, it's just that nowadays people cite it as an example of a love story for some reason

Definitely one of my least favorite bits of required reading, I don't like romance in general and this story is particularly dumb

The version my GD had to read was crude, vulgar and pretty darn close to pornographic IMO. I told her she didn't have to read it and could take a failing grade if she wanted to.

I don't know if that's an over-exaggeration or not.

No version I had to read was anything like you're implying

Though I'm not sure if Shakespeare was a good representation of the time he was in?

But yes, it should never be associated with a good romantic relationship. Especially in modern times.

I fail to see how romeo and Juliet is considered a love story, it's just a tale of 2 hormonal teenagers not using their brains, it's just dumb IMO and hate that it was required reading

Sadly in 9th grade I was also forced to sit through the movie in addition to reading it. The movie was also terrible (but I also just hate movies)

EDIT: Sorry, guys I meant Star WARS. My DH watches these every time he has a day off, and I never cared for the movies. I don't watch them, I find something to read and try to ignore them, but the theme songs are like somebody in my brain with a pick-axe.

Please tell me there's someone else that had to read "Grendel" in high school. I got to skip Shakespeare, thank goodness.

Anyway, next skin crawling song for me would be Christmas Shoes. The fabricated manipulation, the oddity of an unsupervised child purchasing shoes for an ailing parent that's likely bedbound. I hate it with every fiber of my being.
