I have two RIR's and a barred rock hen that are all 12 weeks old. We had friends raise the girls from chicks through 8 weeks before we took them and moved them into their new urban coop/run. I have had the ladies (maybe) for over a month now but have always been quite suspicious of the RIR's. The barred rock is much smaller in size and essentially has no comb or wattles compared to those two RIR's, she is very friendly, wants to be petted and provided attention while the other two seem to always be leery of me entering the run, won't come anywhere near an open hand and tend to show much more dominant personalities. The real reason I am becoming more worried that I have two roos instead of hens is due to the amount of reading I have done through this site and others. Everything I read suggests that larger combs, bigger wattles, green tail feathers and a shiny look to the overall body means that I have cockerels which I cannot have in the city limits in which I live. If this is the case, I can trade out with some friends of ours for hens but want to hopefully catch this before I have two boys starting the neighborhood wake-up calls every morning. For those of you that have a great deal more experience with the RIR breed than myself, I ask that you take a look at the pic(s) I have uploaded and share your thoughts. Thanks and Happy New Year!!!
