Soooo Mad! Silkie roo got killed!

I agree with Amy - it's in their nature, especially at that age, to try and establish dominance. I've found that most of the young boys go through a fairly aggressive stage with both the hens and other males during this time of their lives and often settle down as they get more mature. Very sorry for your loss - he was a very nice boy, but the back up roo also looks really nice. It IS very hard to find a nice black cockerel so I'd sure hang onto the second one (pm me if you would like someone to take him off your hands!). My senior buff roo killed another cockerel when he was young, but is not at all an aggressive bird now - fine with me and the ladies. I often wonder if maybe these things are a fluke - perhaps one got the other in a type of chicken choke hold. I lost a hen some years ago that way - think she just got held in the corner with face into the ground and she suffocated:( Overall though, I think silkie boys are much less aggressive than a lot of other breeds.

If you can find a roo you like i would help you buy him so you can still enjoy your birds. just a thought PM me if i can help i don't raise silkie's or i would hook you up with a great bird.

Wow thanks Bigb-71! I appreciate that! I haven't been on here in a month. I'll give y'all an update!

My spare roo has always been in a bachelor pad and my main breeding roo was always with the hens. Now that my spare roo has had time to mature and grow back some feathers, he really has blossomed. I can't really complain about his looks. He beats the ladies up a bit and plan on separating them soon though. My hens are starting to grow new feathers and I want to see them at their best. They are almost a year old now so I will make the final cut. I don't care about breeding right now. I have a few chicks and a like 5 broodys. Well I want to start culling again but can't because all of my broodys are in bad condition. Guess I will have to wait for them. =\\

I will send you some pictures Ms. Amy of my rooster now. He really isn't that bad. He will produce some good babies! The hens are a getting abused, those poor things. I will definitely separate them! What kind of damage does your rooster usually cause? Do they mess up their wings and tail feathers? Their crests are still there though!

My splash that I got from Bobbi Porto are gorgeous like my blacks! Will send more pictures of those. All of them especially the roosters are just amazing and typey. I will cull down to a trio of each color. Will sell some spare roosters and hens on a few auctions because they have so much potential to sell to some local people. Do I need a permit to sell and ship started silkies or adults? I haven't shipped live birds before! Any tips?

Well this is what my black rooster does.... I have 27 females in there, fertility is running ok, and he has at least a third of his hens totally without crests. I've tried less girls with him and he'll totally strip the females of any feathers then. Now he leave's some of them alone thank god. My only other option is constantly AI'ing. I'd rather just keep the pullets I plan on showing separate.

As for shipping, you first need to wait temps cool off. Anything above 30 degrees and below 80 degrees is workable.... Too high of temps and those small boxes will kill a bird in a hurry. As for shipping, if you get NPIP approved, you can ship almost anywhere. A few certains states require additional testing, a CVI (certificate of vet inspectin), and sometimes special permits. Just have to check before up send.
