Help my RIR was like this this morning when we went to the coop. We have isolated her in our house until she is well. She has been fine up until this morning, I don't understand. She had been eating, playing, and foraging like any other day. This morning however, she didn't want to come out of her nesting box, and was breathing like this. She has been sneezing today, with some mucus discharge. She wont eat today. I have started her on terra-vet and farm boost in her water, also have use vetRX on her beak to help aide the breathing a bit. She does seem to be breathing better this evening, and isn't sounding as rattled in the chest. I did notice however that her crop seems to still be filled with yesterdays meal, not sure why since she didn't want to eat at all today.

Any help would be appreciated, thank.

Aw poor hen Im sure you are so worried right now. Seems like shes having a hard time digesting her food?
Or it could be a gapeworm.

You should check out this website that I found:

I hope someone here can give you some solid advice, and please keep us updated

I am worried, I don;t know what to do. I want to make sure we do all that is possible for her, we haven't had her for too long, we recently rescued her and her sister. The other hen is fine, though since the rescue neither one of them have been laying, but I would imagine that is from the stress of the move. All our other chickens are well in the coop. We have brought her in and she is now staying in our bedroom, in a child play pen, and has an enclosed dog kennel for night hours. I hope someone will help me, and give me some good direction. I would hate to keep giving her on needless medications if they aren't what will help her in the long run.

OK, so this morning my hen seems to be breathing better. But she still has a full crop. She still wont eat, and drinks minimal amounts of water (with the added meds and boost). Does anyone know of a reason she would have an impacted crop, or how to alleviate her discomfort. I have been massaging her crop gently, but sometimes she acts as though it is making it hard for her to breathe. She gets a bit gurgly and gapes her mouth. Any ideas and suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Is her crop full and hard, or full and squishy, or is it just not emptying? Could she have eaten some long strands of grass or something that has gotten stuck in the crop? She doesn't appear to have gapeworm, but more of a crop problem. It could be a side effect of a respiratory infectionas well, or her main problem, once you have treated the crop issue. Here are some links on treating crop issues:

Her crop is soft and squishy, I have been reading about sour crop, and I am not leaning towards that as the issue. I was massaging her crop this morning and she let out some gases from her mouth and man did it stink. I wasn't a fermented smell, just a strong odor. I am thinking of how people say to vomit them, but I am worried she aspirate if I did that.

If the odor was bad she does have sour crop. (That may not be her only issue, though.) Sometimes it is bacterial, and sometimes it is fungal, so some recommend giving an antibiotic as well as an antifungal medicine. Duramycin10 is recommended in one thread as an antibiotic, and I have heard of some recommending activated copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon water as an antifungal if you can't get Nystatin from a vet or Medistatin online quickly. I have no experience in this, and I have heard of some losing their birds vomiting them, but it may help if it is done carefully as the first link recommends.

Thank you Eggsessive, That is what I was worried about. I am pretty sure that is the problem. I had been treating the whole flock due to an upper respiratory infection in one of my hens (not the same one), but the RIR presented completely different then the original hen. Well I guess it is off to the vet for me to pick up some meds and hope for the best. She is definitely doing better then yesterday, but I am still worried. She for sure will be staying in the house for a while until she is completely recovered.
