Need help with what to do with this one. I've read the article on sour crop and will start treatment tomorrow but my girl has a very distended belly. I know she has been laying soft shelled eggs and gave her some calcium tablets and I gave her a soak in warm water with epsom salts to clean her bum up, this was on monday night, this was when I discovered she might have sour crop as she vomited liquid whilst soaking and it stank, gave her a blow dry before putting her back with the rest of the girls but going by her fluffy bum feathers she has not had a proper poop just a small trace on them. Could there be a blockage at that end? If so what to do.

Having a distended belly could point to symptom of fluid (Ascites) in the abdomen. A couple of common causes of fluid are reproductive disorders (Cancer, EYP, Salpingitis, etc.) and/or organ dysfunction/failure.

If she's having problems with soft shelled eggs, I would give her the extra Calcium for a week. Calcium Citrate with D3 is a good choice. 1tablet daily.

Crop issues (symptom) often accompany an underlying condition like reproductive disorders. Everything slows down. I'd try treat her for Sour Crop as outlined in the article below. Sometimes by treating symptoms, a hen can rally for a while, it just depends on what all she has going on.

Thanks

Just to let you know I did as advised and the little love has rallied round. She is being bullied a bit by one of the other hens but I have ringed them all now and will be able to get the bully and crate her for a couple or three days. This little love is 4 years old along with one other from my original flock they were destined for battery hens, so I expect she will have to be culled if it happens again as most of the others I got at the same time had the soft egg and reproductive issues.

Thank you for the update.

I'm glad to hear she's getting along o.k.
Enjoy her until that call has to be made, sometimes it's a short period of time, but then again, I've had them decline only to rally again for a while longer with supportive care. You never know.
