Sour crop help, please

That's what my hen was doing, too. Would that mean it is more likely impacted crop than sour crop? After reading your post it occurred to me that I just put fresh bedding in their coop a few days ago and she may have eaten some of it. I use a blend of hay and straw and usually they don't eat it but I did see a few of them having some.

I put a bowl of plain greek yogurt in a bowl in her cage but she didn't want anything to do with it.

Any other suggestions? Should I put her back out in the coop with the others tomorrow if she seems to be about as well as today?

I would say it starts that way. I sprinkled a little bit of my laying crumble on the yogurt and she ate some that way. She is drinking a lot of water right now and is spitting it up. She is better than she was this morning. Keep her by herself. I have mine in the shower. Keep massaging her crop. Dewormer her as well. I think I'm going into day 6 with this. If you can't get her to eat the yogurt , I use a syringe to squirt it at the back of her throat, make sure you go past were she breaths. you will see small holes back there. I gave her small pieces of grass and dandelion leaves as well. Very small amount. Also boiled egg yoke. And apple cider in her water. Check her crop in the morning to see if its emptied.

Its morning now and I've checked her crop and it is completely empty - am I to assume that this is a good thing; a step in the right direction? I really hope so.

I have looked at your video and my hen doent seem to be doing any neck manouvres like yours is. It looks like she is trying to move something that has got stuck.

I will persevere with the water and mash and see how she gets on today.

Thanks for the feedback. This is a frustrating situation, isn't it?

So my hen (Ziggy) did not touch the yogurt at all. This morning I gave her a small amount of scrambled egg and a little warm mashed potato, but she is not eating anything. She still appears to be alert, which is much better than the first day when I thought she was almost dead. She seems to be moving around ok when I let her out of her cage but she is just not eating at all, and might not be drinking now, it is hard to tell. I gave her water the first day with ACV and she finished it all pretty quickly. But the bowl I gave her early this morning was undisturbed and shows no sign of her having any.

She also has not laid an egg yesterday or today, but I don't know if that is normal for her or not. We have 22 hens and only get about 8-10 eggs a day, so I don't know if she is laying right now or not.

Should I just put her back in the coop and keep an eye on her? I think she is not happy about being in her temporary cage, even though she is nice and warm in the house with it. But her not eating is a little bothersome. How long could that go on?

Am I risking my other chickens if I put her back in the coop like this?

Very frustrating. Mine is not pooping much anymore. She isn't really interested in her food either today. She is no risk to the other chickens if its her crop tha'ts an issue. Have you determined if its impacted or sour? Don't worry about her not laying, she won't if she isn't feeling good. I'm not sure how long they can go without eating. Maybe a week.

Thanks, Pwand.

I'm going to bring her out there this afternoon and see how she does. Still not eating but she is pooping. I don't know if it is impacted or sour.

Impact is typically hard and sour is spongy and can smell bad. Feel her in the morning to see if her crop is empty.

She is doing very poorly today. She was not eating or drinking, like I said, but had been moving around a little bit in the bathroom when I let her out yesterday and she seemed more alert even today. So I brought her out to the coop a few hours ago, hoping that would help trigger her to eat or something. Because of the design of the cage I wasn't sure if she would get out on her own so I helped her and set her down. Ran some errands and when I came back about 2 hours later she is in the same exact spot and like when I first found her, laying weirdly on her side. I gently moved her to see if she had already died but she is still alive. I watched her for a few minutes and as she sort of drifts like she is going to sleep she again will fall to the side. One of the other hens ran into her and she sort of straightened herself up a bit but then went right back into sleepy mode and started to lean to the side again.

I feel like this is a lost cause and I am sad for her.
